The first is practical: make a system too open, and it risks being overwhelming. Make it too humane, and it risks narrowing into something sealed and hermetic, and not useful enough. The Cat, while also a victim of other factors, tried to balance the two and ended up fitting nowhere. The lesson isn’t that humane computing is impossible. It’s that humane computing can’t just mean protective computing. It has to mean trusting users with both simplicity and openness. That’s why Org mode and even Mac System 7 endure and the Cat does not. The deeper implication is harder, but maybe truer: the true Tools for Thought we still wish existed will never come from Apple, Microsoft, Google, OpenAI, or any other large player in the software or hardware space. They can’t. These companies’ scale and incentives point elsewhere—toward lock-in, surveillance, and products that are safe enough to sell but never open enough to empower. The logic of scale makes them constitutionally incapable of building systems that are truly humane and open. The next humane systems, if they arrive, will have to come from outside those walls, as they always have: from margins, from hobbyists, from research labs, and from stubborn communities of practice. But as those platform companies make it more and more difficult to experiment, how do we keep pushing these philosophies forward?

I’ve actually lost count of the number of “ordinary” vulnerabilities confirmed by Google last year, but the important thing is that they were all fixed. The same is true of CVE-2026-0628, described by the official Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures CVE program, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, as an “insufficient policy enforcement in WebView tag in Google Chrome prior to 143.0.7499.192,” that allowed a hacker distributing a malicious extension that a user installed to user “to inject scripts or HTML into a privileged page.” In plain English, CVE-2026-0628, disclosed to Google in November, 2025 by security researcher Gal Weizman, could enable a successful attacker to bypass critical security controls that could then allow for malicious code execution in apps, data leaks and more.

When I was 18 I got a semi-colon tattoo because it was trendy on tumblr and I regretted it for many years until I’ve recently decided that it’s actually now a typography and programming tattoo so it’s fine actually. It was originally set in the regular weight of Linux Libertine but now looks bold.

Related: apparently Sun bought an entire proprietary office suite because it was cheaper than paying for MS Office. It became open source and that's how we got OpenOffice then LibreOffice.

Now that I’m out of school for a minute, I’m going to work some more on my code typeface I’m designing using Iosevka as a base. Calling it ”Consolena,” I just have to edit some of the symbols I think but I’ve been refining and using it for the past 6 months or so. Supports Cyrilic and Greek also

not directed towards anyone specific but maybe we should question the drive to share before/after pics so publicly. I have my criticisms of her work but Serano notes some interesting parallels between sensationalized reality TV about plastic surgery/weight loss and really stark transition timelines

The more dramatic the change, the more “artificial” the whole process will inevitably seem. This is why plastic surgery shows rarely depict people who are conventionally attractive from the outset, even though such people certainly represent a significant portion of those who seek out plastic surgery. Nor do they follow subjects who merely want a nose job or a tummy tuck. Rather, these programs almost always depict people of either average or less-than-average attractiveness, and who undergo multiple procedures at once, thus creating the most dramatic and extensive physical change possible. Similarly, the subjects of sex reassignment programs rarely ever begin the process as very feminine males or as very masculine females, even though many pre-transition trans people fall into these categories. Showing such people transitioning to become trans women and trans men, respectively, would not only make their transformation seem less dramatic; it would give the impression that sex reassignment merely confirms the subject’s “natural” gender identity, as opposed to “artificially” altering that person’s biological sex. Continued. Perhaps for this reason, the most commonly depicted subject on these programs is a trans woman who starts out as a seemingly masculine male. In addition to the reasons for the media’s focus on trans women rather than trans men (which I discussed in chapter 2), there are additional physical reasons to account for this phenomenon. Trans women often have more difficulties “passing” as their identified sex than trans men do, not only because of limitations of the MTF transition process in reversing some of the irreparable effects of prolonged exposure to testosterone, but because people in our culture predominantly rely on male (rather than female) cues when determining the sex of other people. Therefore, some trans women require more procedures if they wish to be taken seriously as their identified sex. Sex reassignment TV programs I have seen havefollowed trans women not only through electrolysis, hormone replacement therapy, and bottom surgery (which are all fairly common), but also somewhat less common procedures, such as top surgery to increase the size of their breasts, tracheal shaves to reduce the size of their Adam’s apples, and voice lessons to overcome their deep voices. Such shows also frequently depict trans women working with movement coaches and fashion consultants, even though it is safe to say that the overwhelming majority of trans women never engage in such a step. Continued. These programs’ concentration on trans people who undergo multiple medical procedures, or who take lessons to help them “pass” as their identified sex, tends to make invisible the many trans men and women who “pass” rather easily after hormone replacement therapy alone, or who choose not to undergo all of the procedures commonly associated with transsexuality. Focusing primarily on those trans people whoundergo the most procedures during their transitions not only shows a more dramatic change—one that reinforces the idea that sex reassignment is “artificial”—but also fosters the audience’s assumption that trans people are merely mimicking or impersonating the other sex rather than expressing their natural gender identity or subconscious sex. Continued. Perhaps no element in these sex reassignment and plastic surgery shows helps confirm the audience’s assumptions about gender and attractiveness more than the before-and-after photos. These pictures are designed to overemphasize stereotypes. In the programs that feature plastic surgery and gastric bypass surgery, the subject is almost always wearing frumpy clothes and frowning in the “before” picture, and dressed smart and smiling in the “after” picture, adding to the perception that they have become more attractive. In the transsexual documentaries “before” photos of trans women almost always depict them in the most masculine of ways: playing sports as a young boy, with facial hair and wearing a wedding tuxedo or military uniform as a young man. Similarly, “before” shots of trans men often include pictures of them wearing birthday dresses as a child, or high school yearbook photos of them with long hair. The purpose for choosing these more stereotypically female and male images over other potential “before” pictures (for instance, ones where the subject looks more gender-variant or gender-neutral) is to emphasize the “naturalness” of the trans person's assigned sex, thereby exaggerating the “artificiality” of their identified sex.

It's clearer, easier to read, and has a slightly heavier baseline weight making everything stand out a little bit more. The Equity variant B is lighterweight and probably more comparable to Times New Roman because of its slightly less noticeable weight but that isn't shown.
