My reminder that protected bike lanes significantly improve safety for EVERYONE on the road--including seniors. A DOT study found protected bike lanes reduce senior pedestrian deaths and serious injuries by 39% and total senior pedestrian injuries by 22%. www.nyc.gov/html/dot/dow...
A screen grab from the NYC DOT's senior pedestrian safety report noting that protected bike lanes greatly benefit the safety of seniors on our streets.

100%. I now somewhat regularly see parents with kids riding their own bikes here, which would have been unimaginable with the old design.

Of course! And totally get it--happy to explain because I know other people are feeling the same way as these projects go in.

As I mentioned immediately after this post, these spaces on Court will be reinforced with a mix of blocks and bike parking. We’ve also been working to reinforce these spaces across the city while building out in-house concrete capacity.

I understand the frustration as markings go in, but compliance generally greatly improves when projects are complete. We are also planning a mix of bike parking corrals and granite blocks to reinforce these painted pedestrian spaces.

Hi Alexandra, as Philip mentions (also hi Philip!), these will be filled in as painted pedestrian islands and vehicles will be barred from parking here. Having the island extend further on each side of the crosswalk will improve visibility, create more ped space, and improve safety.

And, on the redesigned section of Queens Boulevard in Forest Hills, new bike lanes, pedestrian paths, and redesigned slip lanes reduced pedestrian injuries by 45% and total crash injuries by 20%.

On White Plains Road in the Bronx, new protected bike lanes and concrete bus boarding islands delivered a 41% decrease in motor vehicle occupant injuries and a 10% decrease in total injuries. That's because, as we've also seen across the city, bike lanes make streets safer for people in cars.

As part of NYC DOT's quarterly Vision Zero update, we highlighted a few recent street redesigns that brought major safety gains. On Schermerhorn St, pedestrian injuries dropped 31% while bike ridership grew 30%. As we've seen all over, bike lanes make streets safer for pedestrians, too.

Protected bike lane markings are coming in on Court Street. 👍🏻

NYC DOT has unveiled a proposal for safety and public space upgrades along Canal Street. See the block-by-block proposal here: www.nyc.gov/html/dot/htm...

And either come to one of the in-person meetings or fill out the online survey with your feedback.

The Court Street bike lane (being implemented now) plus the greenway over the Gowanus Canal/under the expressway adds a nice protected corridor to Brooklyn's #bikenyc network

"Making speedy deliveries...means workers have to choose between stopping at red lights or making deliveries on time. This dangerous choice is exploitative and forces workers to risk their safety, and everyone on our street, just to earn a living."

Delivery apps and bad e-bike riding
As transportation commissioner, I often hear from New Yorkers regarding their concerns about e-bikes. We have all seen it: riders who run red lights and fail to yield to pedestrians. This dangerous…

I’m not sure about this monstrosity but spaghetti pie—or frittata di Spaghetti—is real and a pretty common street food in southern Italy. My mom made it occasionally when I was a kid. It’s great for when you have lots of leftover pasta!

Alright, dear readers. You asked for it. Here, for your viewing displeasure, a photo of the infamous, disgusting “Brieghetti pie” after it had been sitting in the fridge for a week. God have mercy on us all.

amNY can mislead its readers for whatever agenda it may have, but the facts are that the city has experienced a record low number of fatalities through the first half of the year and continues to see downward fatality trends across *every single mode* year to date.
An amNY article titled, "NYC moped deaths spike, e-bike collisions continue upward trend, NYPD stats show.

311 is the best bet to get these signs fixed. Thank you for bringing it to our attention, Jehiah. We are working to replace them.

Monday night’s one hour rainfall in NYC ranked 2nd…Only behind Ida. That this happened without a tropical system is significant and shows our new reality. The top 3 wettest one hour rainfalls for NYC in the past 156 years have all happened in the past four years.
