Just started Fire Emblem: Thracia 776. Doing justice to the series' infatuation with Irish mythology, we've got an Aoibheall right from the start.

Aoibheall famously appears in Brian Mac Giolla Meidhre's Cúirt an Mhéan Oíche ("The Midnight Court"), a great 18thc poem, also available in translation
Screenshot from the Super Famicon game Fire Emblem: Thracia 776. It shows a cutscene, in which a blonde female warrior called "Eyvel" is superimposed on a sepia map. The subtitle reads: "with its own militia, the Fiana Freeblades, let by the swordswoman Eyvel"

Timely words of wisdom from the epilogue of Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War.

I can no longer say "Three Houses" is the only entry in the franchise I've played.

Onward to Thracia 776!
A screenshot from the Super Famicon game Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War. Two characters, blue-haired protagonist Seliph and green-haired bard/advisor Lewyn are talking. A palace, modeled on a Medieval European cathedral, serves as a background.
Seliph says: "Thank you, Lewyn, but our victory means precious little while our world still lies in ruins. Where do we begin from here?". Lewyn answers: "share the work among you"

Realidade virtual/aumentada e o passado medieval
Materialidade de jogos medievalistas
Usos políticos e ideológicos da cultura material em jogos medievalistas
Olhares decoloniais/anti-eurocêntrico sobre a arqueologia digital e jogos medievais

We're pleased to announce we're putting together a thematic strand at the 1st Brazilian Conference on Digital Archaeology, organized by @archarise.bsky.social.

If you work with medievalist #historygames and/or #archaeogaming in any capacity, we'd love to hear from you!

The Middle Ages in Modern Games conference, the Federal University of Rio Grande (FURG), and the research society ARISE (Interactive Archaeology and Electronic Simulations) are pleased to announce a thematic strand at the I Brazilian Conference on Digital Archaeology.

Archaeogaming and medievalist game studies have enjoyed noteworthy popularity since the past decade. On the one hand, practitioners of medieval history and archaeology have started to devise methodologies to integrate games as research outputs and vehicles for outreach. On the other hand, game studies experts have acknowledged the importance of archaeology to deal with the material dimension of games and the human experiences within virtual spaces.

We invite students, researchers and professionals working with medieval archaeology and related fields to submit proposals for oral communications exploring these themes. The event will be held online and broadcasted via YouTube between 8-12 December, from 6 to 9pm (UTC -3).
Topics include (but are not restricted to)
Archaeogaming and the Middle Ages
Depictions of archaeologists in medievalist games
The archaeology of virtual environments
3D modeling and asset creation for games.
Medieval material culture in modern games
The Middle Ages in analog games
Medievalism and roleplay
Games as tools for history teaching and heritage education
Virtual/augmented reality and the medieval past
The materiality of medievalist games
Political and ideological uses of material culture in medievalist games
Decolonial/Anti-eurocentric approaches to digital archaeology and medievalist games
For more information or questions, please contact Dr. Vinicius Marino Carvalho at
midagesmodgames@gmail.com
Submissions are open until the 5th of November via the following link: https://sinsc.furg.br/fichainscricao/7823
We hope to see you there!

Yesterday, disease took my best friend Puisín Glas away.

To those who work with me, I apologize if I'm a bit slow to respond. There was scarcely a moment in my routine which I didn't share with him. I feel like I don't even know how to work anymore.

FE: Genealogy of the Holy War also features the worst fantasy map of Ireland in the history of cartography.

I don't know what cracks me up the most: the way the fan translation mangled the katakana for the Irish provinces or the fact that Meath isn't remotely in the middle.
A screenshot from the videogame Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War. It shows a map of the region known as "Manster District", with names inspired by actual Irish provinces: Alster (Ulster), Leonster (Leinster), Connaught, and Meath.

For the neophytes in Irish history: Díthorba is a character from a tale some historians believe is exemplary of how kingship 'rotated' between generational claimants in Early Ireland:

Now playing: "Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War"

I've seen my share of Cú Chulainns & Morrígans, but this is the first Díthorba I've come across in a game!

@alexvandewalle.bsky.social and @maciejpaprocki.bsky.social: please, do a 2nd MythGames conference so I have an excuse to write abt it!
Screenshot of the video game Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War. It shows a dialogue between antagonists Daccar and Díthorba. Daccar says "Dithorba! Is the army ready to deploy yet?" To which she answers "Yes, sir. Bishop Cuvuli's wind mage unit has infiltrated the forests near Sailane. They await your command, sir".

Very happy to co-edit/contribute to a festschrift in your honor(and yes, you very much deserve one!)

That said, being a sufferer from impostor syndrome myself, I think these feelings never truly go away, no matter how much we succeed in life 😅

My experience as a college student was that the ablative got weirder and weirder the more uses of it we learned. So I guess I get the yandere (minus the homicidal part).

I'm curious to know why you think it's a tsundere though?

And which in your opinion would be the kuudere?

It includes the tip of Calabria (where my family's from & where the flavors I most associate with "home" come from), Levant and most of Japan (my second favourite cuisines after Italian)

James Newman might be good for classroom use.

@lainenooney.bsky.social has a lot of important research on this topic. Their journal @romchip.bsky.social is also a great source.

If you're willing to read across languages, @riquesampaio.com.br has an interesting book from a Global South perspective

I appreciate the vote of confidence, but I think Eugen knows more abt this than me, given the popularity of the topic in German academia and my shameful lack of proficiency in the language 🤦‍♂️

FWIW, the last I read on the topic was A. Schwartz' "History in Videogames and the Craze for the Authentic"
