I like to imagine that although the first SpongeBob movie does take place after the show, Sponge Out of Water takes place after the first movie, if only because it provides a nice denouement to Plankton's character arc after his absolute moral low point in movie 1

If you think about it, SOOW being post-the SBSP movie is thematically interesting, because in the first movie Plankton, as Bikini Bottom's ruler, turns into a lawless apocalyptic wasteland... which happens to the town again in the second movie, except now Plankton's on the OTHER side of the deal
