6. everyone probably knows this but the sea monster is not a kraken because there are no krakens in greek mythology. it's called Cetus, a name which was later given to whales, but the monster was probably more like a serpentine dragon, maybe similar to the ones in chinese mythology.

5. perseus killed medusa while she was sleeping. weak! now, credit to ray harryhausen, medusa was fucking awesome in clash of the titans and i'm glad she isn't just asleep throughout that scene. but for the record? perseus didn't "win," because he didn't fight medusa. he just killed her.

4. eventually and inevitably, an older perseus kills himself by basically going "is this thing loaded?" to medusa's head. oops.

there is so much to say about medusa, but i am not letting myself go off on that tangent right now. but! for starters!

3. perseus kills a bunch of people with medusa's head. he goes back and settles old scores. his grandfather who abandoned him. a guy who was trying to hook up with his mom. another guy who was rude to him.

one of the things i like about "mythologies" as opposed to "religion" is the moral ambiguity.

2. andromeda was black. i was going to put this as #1 but i had more to say than would fit in the post. andromeda is princess of ethiopia, which is not the same as modern ethiopia, but it's africa for sure.

andromeda? the original captive princess rescued by a white hero? was black? that's wild.

i haven’t found any real justification for the non cave dwelling chimpanzees to be labeled troglodytes. it’s just an old fashioned, possibly racist word that landed on chimps and no one has bothered to change it
