Mixing it with old, clipped paint brush hairs or sand makes for some great swampy or desert ground textures too! Although the hairy one is incredibly cursed looking.

I used Polyfilla joint compound for the mud! I think Americans call it 'spackle'. I used it for so many different kinds of bases!
