January 5, 2026 Featured, Press Releases **FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE **January 5, 2026 **Contact:** Court Beyer, [email protected] WASHINGTON – The following is a statement from **Fish Stark, Executive Director of the American Humanist Association** , on President Trump’s illegal actions in Venezuela this weekend: “We American humanists emphatically and categorically reject the Trump administration’s move to kidnap and arrest the leader of a foreign nation and install itself in control. This aggression violates international law, the sovereignty of the Venezuelan people, and sets a dangerous, chilling precedent for future U.S. invasions abroad. “No more regime-change wars. No more posturing and murdering civilians in the name of ‘American greatness.’ We are all too familiar with the consequences of past U.S. attempts to control oil resources abroad, and we refuse to stand by while more blood is shed. “This is an issue of humanity, of what is right and wrong, and we are outraged by the path the Trump administration has put us on.” ### _The American Humanist Association (AHA) works to protect the rights of humanists, atheists, and other nontheistic Americans. The AHA advances the ethical and life-affirming worldview of humanism, which—without beliefs in gods or other supernatural forces—encourages individuals to live informed and meaningful lives that aspire to the greater good of humanity._

It was fleeting, but atheism's moment in the early 2000s is worth remembering. We had a sense of community that I still miss.

My transition from Christian to atheist was not due to one single incident. It was the accumulation of several questions and observations over a few years.

If something is logically incoherent, it is safe to conclude that it doesn't exist because it cannot exist. Some atheists apply this to gods.

"Every year around this time, I experience a vague sense of unease. The source or even the nature of this feeling has been elusive. I now have a hunch about what it is and where it comes from. It is a response to coordinated efforts to manipulate me into buying more crap I don’t need."

I can't say I've ever been thrilled about the religious aspects of Christmas. But I do think I've reached the point where the excessive commercialism bugs me even more.

I saw 4 different UPS trucks in my neighborhood within 5 minutes yesterday. I guess the logistics of delivering stuff must be trickier than I realized.

I can't blame atheists for feeling annoyed by some of the questions we get from Christians, but there is at least one we should be eager to answer.

I'm not sure what sort of a legacy "new atheism" might have, but they did contribute at least one thing. They helped us recognize the taboo against questioning religious claims. Dismantling this taboo seems like a step in the right direction.

The “atheist” label has acquired negative connotations. Does this mean that it is time to replace it with another label that is less likely to provoke hatred?

Questions like "why do you hate Christianity?" came up as soon as I started writing about atheism. The message was that I should withhold any criticism of Christianity.

If an author wrote a book that was too prone to misinterpretation, we might criticize them for not being clearer. Why should "holy" books get a pass, especially given some of the atrocities they have inspired?

I recently saw a "paranormal expert" claim that anyone living in an older house has experienced "hauntings." How could she be so sure? She said it was because *all* old houses are haunted.
