An older watercolour drawing from when I used to make frequent trips to sketch in London. This shows the Embankment with lots of pigeons, a pavement artist and a couple of Japanese young women on one of the benches. This was sold at an exhibition.

Throughout the course of his long and successful career, Wilfrid de Glehn was an inveterate traveller and on numerous occasions, he was accompanied by John Singer Sargent. The influence of Sargent on de Glehn is clearly evident in this work made near Portud in the Val d’Aosta.

Svartifoss (“Black Falls”) is known for the dramatic pattern of basalt columns surrounding it. These rock formations are created when lava cools slowly and contracts, forming tall, hexagonal pillars.

Imagine you’re standing before Svartifoss, a striking waterfall in Iceland whose beauty lies not just in the water, but in the incredible patterns surrounding it. The waterfall itself is narrow but powerful, pouring straight down in a white, frothy stream. It tumbles over a cliff made of hundreds of vertical basalt columns - tall, geometric rock formations shaped like hexagonal pipes. These columns create a dramatic backdrop that looks almost like a giant organ or a stone curtain. At the top, they lean forward slightly, overhanging the drop like dark, jagged drapes - nearly black in color. Further downward, the columns fade into lighter shades of grey and beige, weathered by time and water. The waterfall crashes into a shallow basin below, ringed with loose rocks and boulders. Around the edge, patches of green moss and low plants soften the scene, giving a vivid contrast to the dark stone and cold water.
