Extremely pleased that the article Tamar Sharon and I wrote on the invisibility of #LongCovid in the Netherlands has now been published!! This invisibility is not accidental, but a result of a lack of institutional solidarity by the government. 👇👇

Vulnerability in the shadows: On the role of institutionalised solidarity and visibility as preconditions of Long Covid solidarity - Social Theory & Health
As we settle into an endemic phase of Covid-19, we are faced with a new public health crisis—Long Covid, with estimates of over 400 million individuals affected globally, and research indicating that everyone is vulnerable. Despite this shared vulnerability, and in stark contrast to the widespread solidarity observed during the acute phases of the Covid-19 pandemic, solidarity seems to be all but absent when it comes to Long Covid. Focusing on the case of the Netherlands, this article sheds light on this discrepancy. Drawing on the work of Prainsack and Buyx (2017), we highlight two elements which help explain this discrepancy. First, the absence of sustained institutionalised solidarity, which could have enabled pandemic solidarity to persist and extend to individuals affected by Long Covid. Instead, Dutch pandemic policy shifted towards an increased emphasis on individual responsibility. Second, several factors rendered Long Covid invisible, such as the government’s unwillingness to monitor the disease, and the nature of the illness itself, which restricts patients’ advocacy. Yet, visibility is a precondition for the emergence of recognition of similarity which is needed for solidarity. We suggest that these elements help explain an absence of Long Covid solidarity beyond narratives of “pandemic fatigue”.

I totally understand, but in my opinion (and no i don't get commission or anything 🤣), it is sooooo worth it. This is the golden series cover by Rackmask, but a limited edition of that, which was handmade. I am so happy with it, and will reuse this as my conference or "formal events" mask.

I always wear @zhouliangmask.bsky.social and @rackmask.bsky.social i really find they are the best. In terms of comfort, fit and also design.

And then Sigga Weland presented her qualitative work on MECFS patients in Denmark, relaying the profound existential impact of not being believed and being psychologised.
vmatthiesboon.bsky.social
Then Ronja Büchner relayed how their quantative data showed that the experience of psychologisation was no only prominent in Long Covid and Post Vac patients - but also detrimental to their (already fragile) health and decreased their trust in medics.

The second on the historical foundations of this psychologisation by Dr Paula Muhr, where she explained how illnesses regarded as "unexplained" became increasingly psychologised through its relation to hysteria.

I am so happy that pur Panel (in German) on "The Violence of #Psychologisation: #LongCovid and other postviral illnesses" went well. It consisted of 4 presentations, the first by myself on the epistemological problems of the BPS model and the need for a postviral ethics.
