SERENITY
new blog post

This began as a meditation on the futility I've been feeling about how difficult it is for artists to feel heard and appreciated in fields that remain dependent on the patronage of the wealthy & cruel.

Fortunately, it ends with serenity. blog.liberatedvoice.studio/serenity/
Serenity
Don’t assume things can be swiftly changed just because it seems obvious that they ought to be. But also don’t assume that things can’t be changed, just because the prospect feels overwhelming.

Recommended reading: Rudolph Herzog's book about humor — what jokes were allowed, what jokes weren't, what jokes could get you imprisoned, what jokes could get you shot — during the Third Reich. It's sobering reading right now, as Trump attacks comedians, late night talk show hosts, and actors.

Empathy is a practice.

The well-wishing mantras that appear throughout my blog post this week are drawn from my version of metta practice, also called loving-kindness meditation. You say or think the words, and notice what arises within you in response to them.

If we aren't going to make public transportation free in NYC (which we should), we should at the very least bring back the unlimited Metro card.

Those station groups not allowing their viewers to see tonight’s Jimmy Kimmel are denying them access to an important moment in TV history.

Any time you take a moment to try and imagine what someone else is going through, any time you find yourself resonating with someone else’s misfortune or someone else’s joy, you are cultivating empathy. blog.liberatedvoice.studio/empathy/

EMPATHY
new blog post

“Empathy” is a word that has lately been receiving rather casual treatment in public discourse, like we’re all in agreement about what it means… but perhaps we aren’t.

This is the playbook, folks.

If you're not paying attention now and doing something about it, then you're going to have to sit down the rest of your life because democracy is being taken away.

Do not be quiet in this moment.

They are weirdly turning ethical journalism into forbidden fruit.

If you want to make something interesting and desirable, just tell us we can’t have it.

The Democratic old guard doesn’t realize that they’re just Fascism Lite (and there isn’t really any such thing as Fascism Lite).

If you think some people are entitled to civil rights and humane treatment but not others, you do not represent my political views or interests. That is most of them.

This person lives in a world where there are actual people, and people who are not actual people

I would not want to be this person

I don’t think people truly understand the ascendency of fascism in this country right now. This is an abhorrent, but not surprising, proposal given the rhetoric and actions of the Trump regime and its far right supporters.

This is interesting, but like, these two realities of kirk are not nearly on even footing.

Goebbels had 6 kids and apparently, I've learned on Bluesky this week, "made a great strudel."

Its much more important to know their horrors than the times they did something nice.

1. Trump threatened every hospital that provides gender affirming care to transgender youth.

Many complied and shut down their programs.

Boston Children's Hospital didn't. They fought back and kept providing care.

And now, they just beat Trump in court.

Charlie Kirk’s acolytes do not see him as someone who was spreading messages of hate, because he was showering *them* with love.

It's just that his love language was telling them who to hate.

What are a singer's most important skills?

I’d argue that breath support, projection, and even beautiful resonance are not a singer's *most* important skills.

I'm talking about focused awareness, interoception, and discernment.
