The cost of Trump’s billionaire-first tax law is more than 10 times higher than the cost of extending the enhanced ACA premium tax credits.
Instead of expanding access to health care, Republicans have made it more expensive. Their budget bill enacted the largest cuts to Medicaid and Medicare in American history, put rural hospitals at risk of closing, and gave massive handouts to billionaires.

Families are seeing premiums jump from under $100 a month to more than $1,600 because the enhanced ACA tax credits are set to expire at the end of this year. Those credits have been a lifeline for thousands of Vermonters.

Vermonters are facing staggering health insurance increases. It didn’t have to be this way. Democrats presented a plan to prevent a health care crisis, extend ACA tax credits, and protect families from financial strain. Republicans rejected it.

As Trump’s economic instability continues and Governor Scott refuses to challenge the policies driving it, the stakes for Vermont’s future could not be clearer. From the cost of groceries and heating fuel to the ability of employers to hire and grow, Vermonters are paying the price.

While the headline unemployment rate hasn’t changed, the number of Vermonters actually participating in the economy has. Vermonters aren’t finding opportunity — they’re dropping out of the labor force altogether.

VT now has nearly 5,500 fewer people working than at the start of 2025. The state’s labor force is smaller today than when Donald Trump and Phil Scott first took office in 2017. The last time VT saw a sustained, months-long contraction was ahead of the the Great Recession.

The Vermont Department of Labor last week released its September employment report, showing that the state’s labor force and total employment declined for the eighth consecutive month.

Corporate landlords are using algorithms to illegally hike rent prices. Representative Becca Balint is working to stop it. Senator Peter Welch is leading the Senate version of the bill, cosponsored by Senator Bernie Sanders.

A second-grade Vermont student and his mother was taken without warning by federal immigration authorities, transported across state lines, and cut off from their support network. That is government overreach and cruelty and an indefensible violation of the rights guaranteed to all of us.

This was a political decision from Donald Trump and our governor is choosing not to fight back. Towns in the Northeast Kingdom can’t afford to rebuild alone.

Despite the severe local impact and Vermont’s clear eligibility for federal aid, Governor Phil Scott said he does not plan to appeal the president’s denial.
