People who are still getting paid through the shutdown, or people in that bracket who don't have to reach for a credit card every time something costs $400, might not feel it yet. But there is starting to be buyer's remorse for Trump votes, before the situation has even really started to get bad.

But here's a straw in the wind: Michigan Survey consumer confidence, via Krugman today: notice that even in the worst of the 2008-9 crisis, it was not as low as it is now. Joe Average seems to be getting a sense, even if people who spend too much time reading and commenting on poli-sci blogs aren't

Sometimes the things I do for fun on Saturdays are indistinguishable (to a non-expert) from what I do for money Mon-Fri.

Is there a tea feed? It does appear that tagging with #tea gets seen somehow...

Setting up a session with YS's "Mu Shu hong" from last year

I felt like this was kind of meh for the $$, until I started pushing the brew time hard, like 15s+

Preparing to drink some #tea, namely a 2009 Tian Yuan brand Yiwu raw puer via White2Tea.com. This one has been in my own storage for 9 years and it's coming along nicely. I will use it up in 8-10 steeps but it's the kind of thing some people might infuse 20 times. It makes a strong orange soup.

And who can forget the soothing, calming effect of viewing Picasso's Guernica?

Ah yes, all the masterpieces that prove Art has to be pretty... Mathias Grünewald's Crucifixion, for example.

🍽️ Cocktail time

I decided to follow @guygavrielkay.bsky.social's suggestion for a martini made with orange bitters. Though I deviated by using French vermouth and a lemon twist garnish.
I must concur it is a fine restorative potion.

Wheeeee!

"VIX is the ticker symbol and the popular name for the Chicago Board Options Exchange's CBOE Volatility Index, a popular measure of the stock market's expectation of volatility based on S&P 500 index options. It is ... often referred to as the fear index or fear gauge."

Tea of the day is a 1990s raw puer gotten from Essence of Tea.

Forty years ago I read John Blofeld's "Art of Chinese Tea" and was fascinated by the description of tiny clay pots ram full with tea leaf to make brew to drink from walnut-size cups. I never expected to live to make tea that way myself.

Really excellent "Taiwan Biluochun" from The Steeping Room

It does not resemble any mainland biluochun I have tasted

But it is extraordinarily fine tea, suitable for soaking all day in boiling hot water

Today's tea: 2006 Shi Kun Mu Yibang

I've heard that in Qing times, Yibang was where the Emperor's puer came from

If this tea is representative, the Emperor's tea-finders knew their job
