No, it's not surprising at all. Trump has his eyes on the resources in the Donbas. He doesn't give a damn for the sovereignty of Ukraine. He certainly doesn't care for democracy anywhere, including the U.S.A. On a personal basis he prefers Putin over Zelensky.

The security guarantees in the 1994 Budapest Memorandum, of which the U.S. was a signatory, meant nothing when Russia took Crimea on 2014 and when Russsia invaded in 2022. It would be irresponsible for Zelensky to accept new guarantees in 2025, especially guarantees from Trump.

It is a shame more Americans don't know their history. Those who are familiar with 20th century world history instantly recognize the drift into fascism in Italy, Germany, and elsewhere that we see every day in the U.S.A.

Why don't incidents spark more outrage? Why do conservative Republicans in Congress remain silent? Our Constitutionally protected freedoms are being snatched away. In 1775 Americans fought a war to gain these freedoms, but now many are willing to give them up w/o a whimper.

Except that they are Christians in name only. What they believe, and what they do, is nothing at all like the Christ of the gospels. In many cases what these people advocate is actually the opposite of real Christian teaching. They have appropriated the name, but not the dogma.
