I just finished Final Fantasy XVI and loved it (even if it fell apart a bit in the back half). For some reason I can't find my way in to XV. What's the trick? What do I need to know to finally get going?

Nothing will improve until one of the parties decides to shut off the wealth pump - and that party will dominate politics for a generation. Everything else is just noise.

The only reason to fight about tariffs, is if you think one party is better than the other. Neither is better. They are both responsible for the wealth pump - equally. Not one more than the other. Equally.
