Well I guess a good question is, how much Japanese do you already know? If you get the chance to brush up on things, grab a copy of GENKI 1 and 2

I guess it really depends, are you going there for a language school? Like something through Go! Go! Nihon? Or are you just vibing over there to immerse yourself with the accents and culture?
Either way, Japan -is- expensive to GET there, but after that things are relatively cheap
