We spent 20 years making phones central to museum visits. Apps, hashtags, scans, signups, beacons, selfies - now we wonder why visitors stare at screens instead of art.

I’ve written about what went wrong and how we can do better:

This article presents some food for thought regarding museum technology. Curious to hear what some of our members who work in museums make of it...

How We’re Building Museum #Technology That Gets Out of the Way.
The uncomfortable truth about museum technology: we’ve spent two decades making phones more essential to the museum experience while simultaneously making them more intrusive

New pricing based on your feedback: simple, transparent, unlimited, budget-friendly.

€399/month (annual). Unlimited locations, exhibitions, chapters, 32 languages. Only cap: 2000 min/month audio (fraud protection— no museum hits this).

QR code at the entrance, next to the artwork, or on a handout. Visitor scans, audio guide opens in their browser - automatically in their language. No signup, no app, no sharing details, no device checkout.

Just: scan, listen. walkietalk.ie

Write your guide once, translate to 32 languages with one click - text and audio generated automatically.

Already have recordings? Transcribe them first with one click, then translate.

Not perfect, few things are, but way way better than "English only, sorry."

Talked to a small museum yesterday. They were quoted €50K for a custom audio guide app. Then another €10K/year for updates. They have 20 staff members. This is why half the museums I visit have no audio guides at all. The pricing model is broken.

We propose €399/month. For everything. That's it.

We just added a live text-to-speech demo to the website. Type anything in any language, hit "Create speech," and hear it in 32 different languages. It's oddly satisfying.

We built Walkie Talkie after years working with places like Copenhagen Contemporary and Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek. Learned what actually works vs. what looks good in a pitch deck. Turns out: simple, fast, and reliable beats fancy and complicated every time. 🏛️

Walkie Talkie runs on reliable, fast servers in Frankfurt, Germany that are not owned by big tech.

We chose EU hosting specifically because European privacy laws are stronger than US alternatives.

Building for museums has taught us that 'mobile-first' doesn't mean 'app-first.' Most visitors don't want another app cluttering their phone—they want instant access to deeper stories. Web browsers are the most universal platform we have.

Call us boring, BUT: The future of visitor experiences isn't in VR headsets, complex AR or reality bending AI - it's in making the technology we're already using work invisibly and effortlessly.

Simplicity always wins. #MuseumTech #Audioguides #MuseumEd

700MB app downloads, device queues, content that takes months to update.

The museum audio guide is broken. Time to fix it.

Happy International Museum Day!

Museums are democracy in action - preserving memory while shaping how we see ourselves and each other. In our fractured world, they remain spaces where complexity is embraced and 'I don't understand' becomes invitation, not dismissal.

This Hilma af Klint audio guide demonstrates the text-to-speech technology available on our platform - sounds pretty great, huh?

You can also utilize existing recordings. Either way, visitors just scan a QR code to listen.

International Museum Day (on Sun 18/5) feels more relevant than ever - a celebration of spaces that anchor us to truth, beauty and shared understanding when so much feels adrift.

Here's to the institutions that make space for nuance in a world that increasingly resists it!

We believe so-called “generative AI” must only amplify your storytelling, NEVER control it.

Translate? Yes. Polish? Yes. Suggest? Yes. Invent facts? Never!

Visitor experiences are best handled by expert human curators, not fabrication-prone algorithms.

Your expertise amplified→ No hallucinations.

5 years ago: "Nobody will scan QR codes"

Today: Gestures broadly at every restaurant menu or tourist destination. The infrastructure is here. Your visitors know what to do.

Time to give them something worth scanning.
