We spent 20 years making phones central to museum visits. Apps, hashtags, scans, signups, beacons, selfies - now we wonder why visitors stare at screens instead of art.

I’ve written about what went wrong and how we can do better:

QR code at the entrance, next to the artwork, or on a handout. Visitor scans, audio guide opens in their browser - automatically in their language. No signup, no app, no sharing details, no device checkout.

Just: scan, listen. walkietalk.ie

Write your guide once, translate to 32 languages with one click - text and audio generated automatically.

Already have recordings? Transcribe them first with one click, then translate.

Not perfect, few things are, but way way better than "English only, sorry."

Talked to a small museum yesterday. They were quoted €50K for a custom audio guide app. Then another €10K/year for updates. They have 20 staff members. This is why half the museums I visit have no audio guides at all. The pricing model is broken.

We propose €399/month. For everything. That's it.

We just added a live text-to-speech demo to the website. Type anything in any language, hit "Create speech," and hear it in 32 different languages. It's oddly satisfying.

We built Walkie Talkie after years working with places like Copenhagen Contemporary and Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek. Learned what actually works vs. what looks good in a pitch deck. Turns out: simple, fast, and reliable beats fancy and complicated every time. 🏛️

Walkie Talkie runs on reliable, fast servers in Frankfurt, Germany that are not owned by big tech.

We chose EU hosting specifically because European privacy laws are stronger than US alternatives.

Building for museums has taught us that 'mobile-first' doesn't mean 'app-first.' Most visitors don't want another app cluttering their phone—they want instant access to deeper stories. Web browsers are the most universal platform we have.

This Hilma af Klint audio guide demonstrates the text-to-speech technology available on our platform - sounds pretty great, huh?

You can also utilize existing recordings. Either way, visitors just scan a QR code to listen.

5 years ago: "Nobody will scan QR codes"

Today: Gestures broadly at every restaurant menu or tourist destination. The infrastructure is here. Your visitors know what to do.

Time to give them something worth scanning.

Walkie Talkie is build and designed in Norway and Denmark. 🇳🇴🇩🇰

We're storing and running everything on secure EU-based servers in Frankfurt because privacy and security actually matters. Your data and content stays in Europe.

Take that, Big Tech! 🇪🇺

We built this after watching most visitors give up at Step 1: Download our app!

Now they scan a QR, it opens instantly, they listen.

Turns out people actually WANT to use audio guides. They've just been turned off by downloads, sign ups and layers of app navigation to get to the actual experience.
