The heatwave is supposed to calm down, but yesterday's warmth carried into this morning.
January 15th's record High is 9.1°C from 2014.
But today's High is already 7.2°C, which would rank as #4.
The record Low is 2.8°C from 2013, and we might beat that.

It feels like a bit of a gag saying this today, but January 12th is the day of the year with our lowest average temperature.
Temperatures bottom out for two weeks, from around new year's to today.
After that starts the slow, slow climb towards spring.

It looks like a January heatwave is right around the corner, and it's worth remembering that they're pretty common. #yegwx #yeg
January averages around 12 above-freezing Highs, and 4 of those get to 5°C.
2024 even got to 10°C twice, but those are pretty rare.

The December that just wouldn't end is finally over.
But how unusual was it?
Let's take a look back at Edmonton weather for a pretty cold and very snowy December 2025.

I put together a few maps and stats on tornadoes across the U.S. and Canada in 2025. Both countries saw above-average tornado activity this year.

I forgot to put a legend on the tornado damage surveys. Just imagine the tornado rating increases from cool to warm.

January 2024 was actually a bit cooler than some other recent years.
But depending on how one counts, the last time that we had a truly cold January (colder than the 20th century average) was back in 2004.

It will surprise no one to hear that in 2025 we were well below that, with the warmest High getting to -12.5°C, and warmest Low to -21.1°C...

Weather≠ Climate.
Weather is short-term(days/weeks). Climate is long-term (30+ years).
A cold snap is a weather event. To see the climate trend, scientists analyze decades of global data: rising temperatures, melting ice, and warming oceans.
One chilly week is a data point, not the trend.

2024 also had 3 rainy December days, with the latest on the 21st.

That's pretty late.
Recently 2023 made it to December 4th.
And going a bit further back 2008, 2007, 2005, 2004, 2002 &1997 all held out a little bit longer.

That's pretty late for a first -10°C, although 2023 got to November 30th, and 2016 & 2009 made it to December.

Last winter, November 22nd was when we got our first big jump in snowdepth, which then stayed with us through March.
2023 waited until December 4th, and after that it was pretty low-snow until a big March storm.
And 2015 made it to November 23rd.
