Walking my eldest home lastnight under an amazing Moon halo. Apparently it signals changing weather.... perhaps indicating coming rain or snow ❄️ the weathers been fair changeable I'd say anyway...

Good morning Bluesky'ers. Last night was wonderful clear so I targeted #NGC281, also known as the #Pacman #nebula for some #astrophotography Now you may need to given it a twist, and a squint, but it sort of resembles #Pacman. This was a 90min #exposure in my back garden, so not #massivelylong...
NGC 281 the Pacman nebula. A bright emission nebula in Cassiopeia. Around 9,200 lightyears away! Do you think it looks like pacman? I think maybe more like a chameleons head 🤔

​Orion climbed high as night deepened. I targeted Alnitak on Orion's belt with my telescope to capture photons from the surrounding Flame and Horsehead Nebulae.
​The Horsehead Nebula, shown to me in a book by my dad when I was young, remains my true inspiration.

The flame nebula to the top is 1350 lightyears away. The brightest star here is Alnitak of Orions belt, it is a Blue supergiant with 2 other stars in close orbit and is 1260 lightyears away. Underneath in a veil of red, stretching a vast 3.5 lightyears, is the beautiful horsehead nebula. And is furthest away at a nice 1375 lightyears from Earth.

I've been on a 2 day conference on preserving our Darkskys. It's given me renewed vigour and enthusiasm about protecting our nocturnal landscape. I took this picture a few years ago from just outside my office in North Yorkshire...

A clear night on the Moor meant for some star gazing and photography with my dad (pictured with his beam). Obviously using a torch won't illuminate the stars. Infact quite the opposite will happen. Still, makes a cool picture...

The whirlpool galaxy. I took this in the North York Moors, an International Darksky reserve. The whirlpool galaxy is actually two galaxy's that are slowly entwining themselves. Oh, & they're 31 million lightyears away...

Saltburn Pier at low tide. Built in 1870, this victorian pier sits under the cliff lift, the oldest operating water balance cliff funicular in the UK. 5 mins down the road from me and the town where I was born. I love the reflection of the sky in the sands...

#macromonday I snapped this poor Feathered Gnat that had succumbed to a spider web. The antenna were out of this world! I was amazed at the detail in the face. The super plush head gear enable the males to 'sniff' out the females. Very useful 💚🙌🏻🦟👃💃

Happy Halloween everyone! 🌌 I'm full of Astronomy wonder and thought I'd share the spookiest nebula I've seen. The Rosette Nebula—I captured this on Christmas night! I was astounded at 3 AM when I finished the stack; it looks so skull-like!
