Warwickshire Mammal Group is a voluntary organisation concerned with surveying, raising awareness and the conservation of wild mammals in Warwickshire, Coventry and Solihull. #mammals #warwickshire https://warksmammalgroup.wixsite.com/warks-mammal-group
There is always something to see though: We recorded bank voles & a brown hare. We went to see the newly enlarged (and recently filled) pond, and our grey day was brightened by a hunting kestrel and some spectacular fungi! 🍄#fungi #ponds #hares #voles

This Saturday we braved the weather and were out surveying for Harvest Mouse Nests! 12 keen searches turned up to look for the nests at Sun Rising burial ground in Tysoe. Lots of nice long grass but sadly no nests were found this time. #survey #nests #harvestmouse @mammalsociety.bsky.social

A recent harvest mouse survey at Warwick Uni campus was a great success with 14 people coming along to search for nests. 9 were found & a partial nest also discovered. This is great news for our 1st survey at this location😀🐀 #survey #nests #harvest @mammalsociety.bsky.social @warwickuni.bsky.social

Almost time to go batty! Wonder if they will make a Bat Detectorist show one day? About 2 friends who go out searching for that rare bat 🤔 They would need some quirky clothes probably in black or purple... Would you watch that show? #bats #detectorists #survey

Now is a great time to look out for Water Voles, most active during the day between April & Sept. Look for nibbled grass & stems near the water's edge or rounded tik-tak droppings. Listen for the distinctive 'plop' of them dropping into the water. Don't forget to record any sightings with us 😊

Last weekend we were at the St James churchyard (Alveston) Bioblitz! We had our Longworth traps out the night before & trapped this beautiful little yellow-necked mouse (Apodemus flavicollis). The distinctive yellow band can be seen in last pic (handled by a trained expert). #mammals #bioblitz

Our best theory is that they have suffered from poor food availability in dry weather in recent weeks, similar to conditions last Sept & may have dispersed into the wider area. We plan to carry out some additional surveys this summer if we get some wetter weather to see if that makes a difference.

Sad 🦔 news, we have been monitoring #hedgehogs at Coombe Abbey Park since 2018. We have had good numbers on regular surveys up until Sept 2024 when none were seen over 3 nights. We have just completed another 3 nights of surveys using torches & thermal cameras & sadly found none at all.😭
