Highlight reel after highlight reel down, eventually Seonghwa lands on an interview with the kid, one of those mid-game commercial break pulls where he’s flushed full pink, helmet indent across his forehead, hair soaked with sweat. According to the man with the mic they tapped him here for landing two goals in the second, bringing his team a marginal lead that stretched further with a veteran teammate’s wraparound thirty seconds before the buzzer. These things are always short. Seonghwa still gets a hand in his pants by the halfway mark. The way he speaks is adorable. Especially adrenalined-up, it’s like the words come absent of thought, straight from the dome, clumsy and thick-tongued and with the average sportsman’s spate of sentence fillers. Seonghwa gets stuck on his plush bitten lips, the crooked teeth peeking through. Wide prey-animal eyes. That uniquely charming rookie zeal, how clearly unused he is to the cameras, yet despite it, you can see he’s dedicated, treating this unlike any other game in the course of his career. No-nonsense. Humble. Shy. Seonghwa slides up to his tip as Mingi’s asked for what might be the millionth time how he feels up in the pro leagues, having had the captain’s assist on his first goal—stuff of dreams for kids like him—and the way he smacks his lips before he speaks makes it weep. Uh, yeah, I mean—sentence starter supreme. His chest is still heaving. Padding projects him broader than Seonghwa knows he really is, sturdy enough but slight with youth, soft in the middle. Gangly like he’s still growing. He shies from attention, but the team’s thoughtless TikTok content does well to capture him casually. On principle, Seonghwa doesn’t go looking for it, but if it happens to sneak into his algorithm, and he happens to like it which may only encourage his algorithm to show him more, entirely organically, that’s truly not on him. Of course, today’s fucked that. Him shimmying out of his boxers says enough. This is how Hongjoong finds him, stroking his dick like he hasn’t been touched in years, gaze blearied on a third rewatch. Seonghwa doesn’t stop, though he does feel his libido cringe at his linemate coming in sweat-soaked and stinking, entirely uncouth, throwing his gym bag right on his unmade bed. He doesn’t blink. It’s just how they are. He takes a moment, shirt slung around his neck, before heading to shower to stand staring at the TV where Mingi’s running a hand through his dark, wet hair, scratching at his pale neck. His low stumbling timbre overlays, at considerate volume, the slick schluck of Seonghwa’s hand as he works desperately towards completion. Hongjoong sighs. ‘He’s so fuckin’ sweet. Media’s gonna eat him alive by the end of the season.’ Seonghwa, slowing his roll, gulps. ‘Yeah,’ is all he manages. They quiet to continue watching, only a short while until the end, when shame rears up and has Seonghwa fumbling the remote in clean hand to a new clip, this from only a week ago. Here, there’s a cut on the kid’s cheek. Post-game, locker room fluorescents, loose logo shirt hanging from his frame as he cycles through requisite questions. His eyes are glassy in the way that exercise exhaustion will do you. Seonghwa sees this and groans. Hongjoong, brows pinched, bites his lip. Clearly stalled and can’t be blamed. They get to the end of an answer professing the goalie’s value or something like that before he pipes up: ‘alright. What’s the plus-minus on his virginity, you think?’ The thought isn’t novel, not even untouched today, but near-done and brain-souped and boring his gaze into the shine of Mingi’s eyes, how his hair is stuck up in the back and he hasn’t noticed, his smooth pale forearms, Seonghwa finds it all too evocative; too much to bear. With a pained gasp, he comes. It lands all over his shirt, a monument to this slip in control. Hongjoong turns to him and laughs. ‘Come on, dude.’
