I'm realizing how much I thought of Germany in WWII as a monolith, which I feel embarrassed about now.
I can only imagine how disgusted and helpless so many Germans were by what their country had become, even before the worst atrocities came to light.
And they couldn't "just leave" either.

Ignoring entire subsets of your population just because they offended you sensibilities or even challenge them, is how you end up with the shame of Germany after WW2. Just saying 🤷♂️
