I've heard conflicting sources on whether it's "animation" shortened or a french loan word (and the e accent doesn't really matter when "e" is pronounced the french way regardless) but if you're right, it's still funny that two separate languages shortened the word in the exact same way! 😆
That is a fun thought, but I believe "anime" is short for "animation" (アニメーション, animēshon). Not actually the French word (unless you specifically add the ´ but that's not how it is in japanese)
