Darkness, as humanity well knows, exists in many places in our world. The windowless, lampless room; the rotten, dripping cave; the cold, heavy abyss of the ocean; the infinite void of intergalactic space, stars far too distant for any solace, light too slow to show you even the tip of your nose. These exist within our mind as dreams, coming to us as nightmares. But sometimes - sometimes, under strange moons - nothing crawls up the sides of our beds into our ears as we sleep. A vacuum takes hold. And from new depths emerges a truer blackness, called to attention by lack of sleep, say, or sometimes too much sleep. We have known this emptiness since the first inklings of consciousness as a child; it has been our constant companion, distant yet observant, throughout our raising. As we grow older, we squirm and we writhe. The blackness feels like a shackle, weighing us down, keeping us from self-sought potentials. So we bury it. We suffocate it. We burn it, we eviscerate it, we imprison it. But it is never enough. It always returns, leviathan from the deep, when we least expect it, often leaping upon its prey in the dead of the night. It is a horror worst than any other, because it is familiar. Familiar and horrible, wretched from its mutilation by our hands. It seeks its birthright. We fight it, but often fail. It wreaks havoc on our lives for brief periods. Sometimes - sometimes, under cruel moons - the periods become less and less brief, the havoc wrought more extreme. Sometimes it reclaims its birthright, once and for all. And the darkness becomes complete.
