A diet rich in wholegrains, nuts, fruit and veg could prevent 15m deaths a year and cut cancer rates.

Our Asst Dir Dr Helen Croker is quoted: "It's heartening that healthy diets can align with the most sustainable globally."

Now we need policy action! ✊

Thank you to @drscottarthurmp.bsky.social for meeting @wcrf.org at #LabourConference to talk about our work on cancer prevention, particularly as it relates to alcohol.

We were also pleased to discuss the Rare Cancers Bill, which aims to drive research & investment into treatments for rare cancers.

From today new laws in England will restrict promotion of products high in fat, sugar & salt – banning "buy one get one free" deals: major progress for health equity.

With obesity linked to 13 types of cancer, the government needs to help make healthy foods affordable and accessible for all.

This research that we co-funded confirms body fat distribution is key to cancer risk. As @jpanina.bsky.social says: "While our Cancer Prevention Recommendations highlight the value of a healthy weight, mounting evidence shows body composition is also crucial"

Not all fat is equal: Body fat distribution linked to cancer risk
New research shows that where fat is stored in the body may influence cancer risk more than overall body weight.

An estimated 6.3 million new cancer cases will be diagnosed between now and 2040. Around 40% of these are preventable.
Prevention by addressing modifiable risk factors such as obesity and alcohol must therefore be a priority of the forthcoming National Cancer Plan #OneCancerVoice
wcrf.org
Today we came together as #OneCancerVoice calling on the government to ensure that the National Cancer Plan delivers world leading action on cancer. Prevention will play a vital role in reducing the cancer burden and allow millions more to live healthier lives free from cancer.

If companies do not act,
the UK government must implement mandatory guidelines, aligned with international standards such as those of the World Health Organization, to make meaningful progress towards their stated aim of raising the healthiest generation ever. This will have the added benefit of supporting the growth agenda by levelling the playing field amongst businesses and providing greater certainty.

Today the UK government published new voluntary guidelines on commercial baby food intended for children up to 36 months. They aim to reduce the levels of salt and sugar in these products and make labelling clearer to support parents.

Globally, less than half of all babies under 6 months are exclusively breastfed (as recommended by WHO).

As @ioanav.bsky.social wrote in her blog for World Breastfeeding Week:

"Promoting, protecting and supporting breastfeeding should be a key goal of public health in the 21st century."
wcrf.org
Many women struggle to breastfeed or opt not to, often in the absence of adequate support across policy, societal, and healthcare systems.

This is why policies to support as many parents as possible to choose breastfeeding are more needed than ever
