Employees do have 5th Amendment rights, but there are processes in place for addressing that, explained here. Will be interesting to see if the IG pursued anything like that (which would start by seeking a declination from DOJ).

Even then, he couldn't refuse to turn over his phone under the 5th.

The petition could indeed increase pressure on the administration, which is currently facing pushback from both Republicans and Democrats after reports that the initial strike on September 2 was a “double tap” strike conducted after Hegseth ordered the military to “kill everybody.”

The family believes that Alejandro Carranza Medina, who was 42 years old, was killed in the second of the publicly announced boat strikes. In their petition to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, they say that Carranza was denied his rights.
