At the risk of sounding pollyannaish I think hearing the president say "We took the freedom of speech away" would get through to people who tune out his unusual inanity

Trump: "We took the freedom of speech away because that's been through the courts and the courts said you have freedom of speech, but what has happened is when they burn a flag it agitates and irritates crowds."

also, in keeping with Vance’s view of american identity, only white people are fully American with the right to critique or dissent. nonwhites must show proper gratitude (supporting Trump or marrying JD Vance) before they can speak critically of the country (in approved ways, of course)

Weaponized gratitude is a key tool in the abuser's toolkit. The goal is to convince the victim that they owe the abuser so much, they should feel guilty for wanting to complain.
Tweet from the VP:
Joy Reid has had such a good life in this country. It's been
overwhelmingly kind and gracious to her. She is far wealthier than most.
Yet she oozes with contempt.
My honest, non-trolling advice to Joy Reid is that you'd be a much
happier person if you showed a little gratitude

Nine of nine, rarity score of 8, Red Sox only (and eight Sox caps).

Couldn’t scrounge up a Venezuelan all-star in a Sox cap, but I’ll take R.B.I. Baseball legend Tony Armas. (Sub him in for Bill Buckner; guaranteed home run in his first at-bat.)

I don't remember where I saw this but the binary we live in is where random social media users represent entire left wing movements, whereas the statements from the highest leaders on the right aren't even taken as being representative of what *they* mean

American Eagle was dragged into an online outrage cycle after conservative media figures claimed that liberals were offended by the clothing company's ads featuring Sydney Sweeney and a denim-themed pun about her "great jeans."

We checked the data. That wasn't true.

and lets LaNorris Sellers be LaNorris Sellers? Then, sure, maybe Carolina ruins a season or two.

But if not? Well, Beamer Ball giveth, and Beamer Ball taketh away.

Oklahoma and A&M barely squeaked by Auburn. Ole Miss only beat Kentucky by a touchdown.

What does all that portend? Maybe nothing. But what if Carolina gets a couple defensive or special teams scores (like the two it needed to soundly beat South Carolina State) and OC Mike Shula drops the reins
weekendsofsound.bsky.social
So it’s tough to think of this as a get-right game. Carolina’s still leaky—on both sides of the ball—and after a bye week starts the brutal stretch of the schedule, with potentially five top-ten opponents in a row. Alabama and LSU are coming off big week five wins, but both are (clearly) beatable.

for more than six yards per carry.

LaNorris Sellers looked more like he did last year, but the offense is still sputtering. Only Sellers picked up more than four yards a carry, and Rahsul Faison and Matt Fuller didn’t even pick up three. Only Vandrevius Jacobs caught more than one pass.

and we’re left with a score of 21–13. I know, football doesn’t work that way, and yes, that’s still a Carolina win. But turnovers dug Kentucky into a hole that they couldn’t escape—without them, maybe Kentucky doesn’t force the passing game and maybe Seth McGowan keeps slashing the Gamecock defense

Sunday morning thoughts on Gamecock football, week five:

Discount the two turnover-return scores by the defense—the Jatius Geer scoop-and-score following a Dylan Stewart sack (that would have been, admittedly, a huge third-down stop), followed by the Gerald Kilgore pick-six just two plays later—

Nine of nine, rarity score of 3, Red Sox (in Red Sox caps) only.

Thought I was being sneaky with Boggs.

I think Rico Petrocelli played all of two games at first.

late November, at that—before they do again.

But, hey, at least Clemson lost again.

The read is that Carolina was probably lucky to keep this one that close.

Kentucky’s next, at home, and then a bye week heading into the murderers row of at LSU, Oklahoma, Alabama, at Mississippi, at Texas A&M. If Carolina doesn’t pick up a win next week, it might be until November—
weekendsofsound.bsky.social
Brian Rowe looks like a ballplayer, Gerald Kilgore came up with a pick and the defensive backs had three nice break-ups.

But that Carolina was still within spitting distance in the fourth quarter thanks to some big plays and big breaks doesn’t suggest that this was one that just slipped away.
weekendsofsound.bsky.social
Factor in, too, that Carolina racked up fourteen penalties for ninety-eight yards.

So, yeah, bad football all around: a defense that has trouble tackling, an offense that can’t establish a ground game, a team that takes too many penalties.

Sure, there were positives: Sellers looked better,
