#screenshotsaturday Heavy attack button can be held for a charged version. This character is made from multiple different 2d skeletons which are sometimes substituted for traditional animation. #gamedev #solodev #metroidvania The goal is to avoid the paper doll or "flash" look as much as possible.

If only it was this easy to escape the caves... still kinda in that 'how is building this vertical slice gonna work phase' but i kinda like the caves I modeled this time. the actual plot doesnt really involve a happy reunion by the camp fire tho... #screenshotsaturday #psx #horror #gamedev

ME: Now Mom, just remember, there's a lot of disinformation and AI in your social feed and your friends' Facebook.
MOM: I know! My friend sent me this crazy post where someone used AI to make an image of a giant frog fighting Army troops!
ME: ... okay, no, that one's ... goddamit, Portland.

Hey #IndieGameDev people, here's a question for you. What's the one thing you wish you knew at the start of development?

First and foremost: Where is the game design ultimately going to land?

Second and third are:
What engineering is required to support that design?
What's the best art style to support that design?

You need to answer all three ASAP, but the design question drives the other two more than visa versa.

How many of my fellow #indiedev friends are building for themselves vs building for an audience? How exactly have you determined who your audience is and what makes them tick?
werecoder.gamedev.blue
I define my game's vision by honing in on types of fun that I enjoy and understand. I define my target audience as other people who also enjoy that type of fun. I am building for my audience, but I can serve as a coarse litmus test for they want because I am my own first customer.

Three WereCoder facts:

1. My first job was operating rides at an amusement park.
2. I hate the taste of both coffee and beer.
3. I have first hand experience with earthquakes, tornadoes, and hurricanes.

Gimme three!

Three Robin Facts:

1. I have mild neurological damage from an aneurysm when I was 18

2. I got my start as a game designer making savage worlds modules for my friends

3. I have 150+ well curated playlists not counting my music video archives

Three random things about me:

1) I wrote over ten novels, I am extremely embarrassed by.

2) I used to be in a rap group

3) I can't swim and I'm terrified of being underwater

Final thoughts
Motivation drop and imposter syndrome are common in #SoloDev. Focus on both making and 𝑓𝑒𝑒𝑙𝑖𝑛𝑔 progress. Reach out. You’re not alone. Your struggles don’t disqualify you; they connect you.
werecoder.gamedev.blue
Other traps
⚖️ Comparison burnout : Focus on your progress, not comparison.
✨ Perfectionism : Focus on high return low effort features. Only polish once it's fun.
💬 Isolation : Engage others! There's nobody in the house but me, and yet I'm talking to you.

🌿 Take a break (cont):
Meanwhile, a friend needed a month to recover from surgery. I made a Minecraft server. We played while they recovered. For a whole month I just played Minecraft. That wasn't wasted time though. You see, when I returned, I had my spark AND I had a practical, shippable solution.
werecoder.gamedev.blue
🌿 Take a break:
In 2015 I quit AAA to go full-time #IndieDev, living on savings that would only last three years. In 2016, while stuck on procedural generation and ending a long term relationship, I hit a wall. Depression hit hard.
werecoder.gamedev.blue
🌱 Think smaller:
When a large task seems overwhelming, it's OK to do part of the task, then stop. Maybe just get the task organized. Or maybe just do the first part. After that, you can stop and feel accomplished.

This isn't specific to #GameDev, it's how I deal with depression.
werecoder.gamedev.blue
Problem 4: General lack of motivation (or depression)
🧑‍⚕️ Ask for help. Talk to a professional, a friend, or the #IndieDev community.
🌱 Think smaller. Allow yourself to feel accomplished after smaller tasks. (See reply below)
🌿 Take a break (see reply for a related story).
werecoder.gamedev.blue
Problem 3: Feeling a lack of direction
🎮 Play similar games. Ask yourself why they're fun.
🧸 Get a Teddy bear. Explain to the bear why your game will be fun. Listen to your own explanation.
🎧 Absorb inspiration from music, SFX, and art with your game's theme.
werecoder.gamedev.blue
Problem 2: Feeling a lack of progress
🧩 Break features into smaller pieces. Set goals around the individual pieces.
👀 Show this progress to someone. (It helps.)
⚡ Focus on high value problems with low effort solutions.
📜 Keep a history. Reflect on how far you've come.
