Suit Yourself or Shoot Yourself!! II: The Escape (1995)

Two films in and it already feels like hanging out with old friends. Show Aikawa is hilarious in this, but Ren Osugi (and his little pudding cup) is the MVP.

Many are calling this the most terrifying image of Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s career.

Michael McDowell was the best to ever do it, and by “it” I mean writing horror paperback originals about weird southern families.

The Age of Assassins (1967)

Nakadai plays it like Carey Grant in Monkey Business with a serious case of athlete’s foot, as he absent-mindedly dodges assassination attempts by a series of increasingly oddball killers. Features a mechanic named Otomo Bill. Extremely my kind of movie.

Even Jim Rockford himself wouldn’t be able to solve the mystery of the handwritten post-it note titled “Rad Episodes” found inside my factory sealed Rockford Files blu-ray set.

The Silent Samurai: A Hideo Gosha created riff on Corbucci’s The Great Silence, starring Tomisaburo Wakayama. A mute swordsman travels the land as a bounty hunter, searching for the Spaniard that killed his family and cut his throat. Kenji Misumi directs.

The Lethal Three (starring Koji Yakusho) is the ideal TV series: a trio of colorful wanderers get into weekly adventures. There’s a sword fight. The end. It’s what the medium was made for.

Some recs: Sonny Chiba as Jubei in the Kinji Fukasaku directed series Shogun’s Samurai & Shogun’s Mission (w/ Etsuko Shiomi & Hiroyuki Sanada).

Most filmmakers would fall into the trap of focusing solely on the cool and beautiful bounty hunter, but Amemiya understands the juice is in hanging with the two goofiest dudes ever.

Columbo may have had Robert Culp as a killer, but only Furuhata Ninzaburo had Chairman Kaga.

The Rapacious Jailbreaker (1974)

Sadao Nakajima is a big blindspot for me in the realm of Toei contract directors, something I need to fix. Much funnier than expected. Loved the file in the tempura gag. A good ol’ boy remake starring Burt Reynolds would’ve tore it up on the drive-in circuit.
