In case you missed it! You could be LAME and worship some diety of justice and compassion, or you could be METAL and worship a GIANT DAMN BEAR, like the heroes (?) of Richard Adams' SHARDIK: what-mad-universe.pinecast.co/episode/c33b...

The greatest threat to an ancient civilization? BEARS. At least, that's the argument of Richard Adams' SHARDIK, tackled on today's episode of What Mad Universe?!? what-mad-universe.pinecast.co/episode/c33b...

Sheridan le Fanu published his vampire novella 'Carmilla' in a magazine called 'The Dark Blue' between 1871 and 1872. I don't think I've ever seen a bound volume of The Dark Blue until today...and it's BEAUTIFUL! 💙
#c19th #vampires
two bound volumes of The Dark Blue from 1871-2. They are beautiful, with gold foil gothic lettering and - unsurprisingly - a vivid dark blue cloth cover.

Our latest What Mad Universe?!? continues our (well, mostly Philip's) look into the connected horny supernatural universe of Anne Rice with the Mayfair Witches series, and oh man, this one has ALL the trigger warnings: what-mad-universe.pinecast.co/episode/ca84...

In science fiction, so much of what is "classic" was essentially written for one man: John W. Campbell, the editor of the pre-eminent US SF magazine. Even the stuff published elsewhere, because it was often sent to him first. Think on what it means to have a whole genre filtered through one dude.

And now, a look at a science fiction book that might not even be science fiction, either now or at the time it was published: Sinclair Lewis's It Can't Happen Here, a speculative look from 1933 at what it might look like if fascism came to the US:

The Da Vinci Code largely lifted its twist from a "non-fiction" book called The Holy Blood and the Holy Grail. The writers of that book tried to sue Dan Brown but the judge threw it out, pointing out that they can't claim it's real history and also a copyrightable story.

I dunno man, the whole "uh...we need to end space exploration and use that money to feed the hungry" argument drives me nuts because I'm pretty sure we could easily afford both if we didn't spend more than the next dozen countries combined on army shit that doesn't work.
