Discover this creepy, charming monster-slaying fantasy romance—from the perspective of the monster—by Nebula Award-winning debut author John Wiswell

Shesheshen has made a mistake fatal to all monsters: she's fallen in love.

Shesheshen is a shapeshifter, who happily resides as an amorphous lump at the bottom of a ruined manor. When her rest is interrupted by hunters intent on murdering her, she constructs a body from the remains of past meals: a metal chain for a backbone, borrowed bones for limbs, and a bear trap as an extra mouth.

However, the hunters chase Shesheshen out of her home and off a cliff. Badly hurt, she’s found and nursed back to health by Homily, a warm-hearted human, who has mistaken Shesheshen as a fellow human. Homily is kind and nurturing and would make an excellent co-parent: an ideal place to lay Shesheshen’s eggs so their young could devour Homily from the inside out. But as they grow close, she realizes humans don’t think about love that way.

Shesheshen hates keeping her identity secret from Homily, but just as she’s about to confess, Homily reveals why she’s in the area: she’s hunting a shapeshifting monster that supposedly cursed her family. Has Shesheshen seen it anywhere?

Eating her girlfriend isn’t an option. Shesheshen didn’t curse anyone, but to give herself and Homily a chance at happiness, she has to figure out why Homily’s twisted family thinks she did. As the hunt for the monster becomes increasingly deadly, Shesheshen must unearth the truth quickly, or soon both of their lives will be at risk.

And the bigger challenge remains: surviving her toxic in-laws long enough to learn to build a life with, rather than in, the love of her life. The lovely foiling featuring a ribcage and tentacles with mushrooms and jawbones. Hardcase is black.

Monster anatomy is my absolute favorite. I loved learning about the physiology of different creatures. And the twist at the end was spectacular. Definitely one of my favorites this year and I'm glad it got to be one of my Sapphic Sept prompts.
whirloglyphics.bsky.social
I really enjoyed the tender and emotional romance between Shesheshen and Homily. The pacing on their pining and slow burn was spectacular. It kept me at the edge of my seat and anxious to find out how Homily would take the confession that Shesheshen is the monster she's hunting.

Honestly indepth

Investment in what society wants or expects of her. I loved how Shesheshen constantly shape shifts and the mechanisms behind it. Utilizing the bones from devoured prey to build your own skeletal system is so hardcore. I also loved the bear trap in her chest as a ribcage. Honestly iconic.

To deeply. She suffers at the hands of her familys derision and scorn for no other reason than she doesnt fit the mold. Shes a kind and gentle person who loves fiercely and has many strange passions. Her commitment to justice and tenderness is a wonderful contrast against Shesheshens lack of

Monster. She isnt monstrous (outside of eating corpses but like
.. a gals gotta eat ya know). And that her being inhuman is used for a larger conversation of what constitutes as humanity. What truly makes us human? Is it our bodies or our actions?

And Homily was such a sweet character who I related

Mood. I loved her internal monologues and starting with the moment of her birth of chewing her way through her "father's" body. It was so grotesque in such an intriguing way. I loved her general detachment and factual way of interacting with the world.

I love that while Shesheshen is definitely a

This was such a fun read, from start to finish it is both humorous and foreboding. Which is a tough juggle storytelling wise. I really enjoyed Shesheshen as a character and monster. 90% of the time she is completely baffled by people and their ridiculous social conventions which is honestly such a
