#OnThisDay, 4 Oct 1936, women join the Battle of Cable Street, in London's East End, protesting against a fascist march through the area. Of the 79 protestors arrested, eight are women, including Blanche Edwards (pictured).

A military megaproject led to Mexico’s biggest paleontological discovery—and is now reshaping what we know about mammoths.

Map showing locations where high-quality mtDNA samples have been recovered from mammoths. The dot size corresponds to the approximate number of samples recovered. Columbian mammoths recently discovered in Mexico are the first from a tropical area to yield mtDNA; the Basin of Mexico location is the largest dot on the map and the furthest south. Columbian mammoths in North America descend from a 1-million-year-old steppe mammoth discovered in Krestovka, Russia, with additional ancestry from woolly mammoths.

What even a palaeontologist's relationship to field work? Where does it figure in our research lives? What, if any, are the growing pains we suffer to become our fully-fledged palaeo selves? We all need to know this, to understand it, in order hopefully make it better.

It’s about your experiences of finding those early field work trips that teach you how to prospect, how to dig, map etc. Even if you have no interest in field work at all, but you’re a post-graduate or post-doc palaeontologist, I want to hear from you!
