By removing 50-100% of each weir, we opened up these rivers for wildlife. The improved flow will also sweep away excess silt; just in time for trout and salmon spawning season. New woody material along the edges, and fencing to protect the riverbanks from livestock, will also help 🧵 3/4

There are countless rivers barriers across the UK and Ireland, many of which no longer serve the purposes they were built for. This summer, we tackled a series of boulder weirs in the Lune and Ribble; two northern rivers that have the potential to be fantastic wild trout habitat 🧵 2/4

Happy #DamRemovalDay! 🎉 This celebration of free-flowing rivers is a great reminder of the issues that dams, weirs, and sluices can cause for fish. Wild brown trout can be cut off from crucial spawning areas, and those trapped upstream are especially vulnerable to disease and pollution 🧵 1/4

In hot weather, the bees use this water to cool their hives through evaporation 💧 But to take a drink, they need a safe place to land. When we add woody material to a river, it benefits not only fish but a huge range of other wildlife too - bees included! 🧵2/3

Have you ever seen a bee drinking from a river? 🐝 Rob Mungovan from our team spotted these honey bees grabbing a cooling sip from a Hampshire chalk stream. While they get a lot of their water from nectar, honey bees will top up at rivers and other sources 🧵 1/3
