This is being taken out of context.

Duffy is referring to the Essential Air Service program, a subsidy for operators at rural airports, which will lose funding on Sunday.

Shutdowns cause problems, but he didn’t specifically say “safety drops off on Sunday.”

When @theaircurrent.com was but a wee publication, we broke a huge story: It outlined how air traffic controllers had the legal authority call out sick. Those actions massively slowed some airports and ultimately ended the 2019 U.S. gov shutdown. Watch for a repeat. theaircurrent.com/aviation-saf...

New: Tina Amereihn has been appointed as the first permanent head of aviation safety at the FAA in nearly a year. She previously was acting in this role, which is responsible for a litany of cert and safety oversight functions.

There’s not much info on that in the document. FWIW I can’t recall a time when the academy has been exempted so it’s uncharted waters.

As the federal gov prepares for a shutdown, OPM has notified agencies to simultaneously draw up reduction in force plans.

Guidance related to that dropped today. Remarkably, OPM has determined that anyone working on a RIF plan would be "excepted" from the shutdown and would still have to work.

Seems relevant as this week kicks off.

On the CR / government funding news: any sort of lapse in funding come Friday & subsequent shutdown will furlough 17,000+ employees at the FAA and could significantly impact air travel going into the holidays w/ minimum ATC staffing. Excerpt from the DOT/FAA shutdown plan:

NEWS: FAA confirms this AM's @wsj.com report, saying that it will allow "limited delegation" to Boeing to issue its own airworthiness certificates on some 737 MAXs & 787s.

This would be the first time Boeing has done so since in 2019 for the Max and 2022 for the Dreamliner.

This is really the first time that American has been in the spotlight.

Until now, most have assumed that they played a relatively small role in causing the crash, though counsel for this case has held no punches against them, saying their suit will prove American's major role in the crash.

Note: This is just one suit, representing one family.

Counsel says he believes "a majority" of families have filed complaints against the gov, a procedural step required before a lawsuit can be filed. (This family did this in March).

That implies we may see more lawsuits, though time will tell.
