Retired elementary schoolteacher and Episcopal priest. Loves cats, reading, cello, writing, and coffee! 🖋️Recent fountain pen convert. Wait, did I mention the coffee? ☕
Dicey going down to Midnight Mass tonight what with a surprise snowfall, freezing temperatures, and fog, but worth it. Lovely service in that special way that a small close-knit parish church does. 🎄

Now at home with a cup of hot chocolate watching Nine Lessons and Carols from Westminster Abbey. ♥️

OK, last Christmas Eve post, then I'd better get moving to make Midnight Mass:

I love Christmas Pageants, and I will put babies dressed as angels in tinsel halos up against all the darkness in the world. Evil doesn't stand a chance! 👼👼👼
December 25, 2025 at 1:12 AM
🧵1/2 - Ask me about virgin births, wandering stars, and choirs of angels midsummer when I'm mowing my lawn, and I will explain about Semitic literature style, the Greek hero storytelling format coopted later by Roman Emperors which Christians used for contrast, etc., but ask me on Christmas Eve...

My last standing joke before Midnight Mass:

Coming out of the Sacristy, resplendent in alb, white stole, and cope, the choir would be waiting for the processional, and I would sigh heavily and say, "Years of seminary to be called Father, and here I am dressed as Mother." Always got a big laugh.

1/2 - At Midnight Mass at the Cathedral, porcelain baby Jesus wasn't put in the manger until we went to the creche during the processional. Before then, baby Jesus was safely in my pocket. One of our black parishioners and I had a running discussion that our porcelain baby Jesus was so white...

Cold & rainy — Just got back in from feeding birds and outside cats. Can't feel my hands. The poor wrens just mobbed the feeders after I filled them. Crusty old Magnificat grumbled and complained about leaving his warm shelter when I came out. I apologized, but he was having none of my crap.

Charlie is in his office even on Christmas Eve!

A Poem for Christmas

🧵1/10 — The angels who spent days with needle and thread
repairing their torn wings have come.
The ones who overslept have made it,
sliding in just in time.
The ones who sat at bedsides as someone breathed their last are here,
their hands still smelling of nard...

Trump appears to be panicking about his mortality and coping with it by putting his name on as many things as possible so people will remember him.

But his name will be removed from buildings, disappear from headlines, and he will be forgotten, except as a synonym for greed and cruelty.

Finished up the turkey soup, a 3-day process:

• Slow cook the carcass overnight with seasonings and vegetables to make the stock;

• Slow cook the stock with new vegetables and seasoning, add in all the turkey meat off the carcass;

• Add noodles after it's cooled.

It's scrumptious!

Been the priest at church since Jan. when the rector took a job in Oklahoma. Love serving, but only got off due to surgery in Nov. They hired a sub till Feb. But today, we heard they hired The Rev. Hannah Wilder who arrives in Mar. May have to sub in Feb., but I'm back to retirement!

What if the dragon in the story maybe used to be a bad guy, but now is just lonely? After all this time, could he still come home for Christmas? Made me cry.

(Although, full disclosure, during the holidays, McDonalds commercials make me cry. Yeah... kind of a crybaby.)

Heard a sneeze from the next room and automatically said, "Gezundheit!" Thought a kitty had sneezed. But then realized, no, that was my English muffins popping up out of the toaster.

I think I do need a quick nap before dinner.

Teatime couldn't come a moment too soon! It's cold and raining here in the mountains, probably snow in the higher elevations and over the pass to California. 🌧️ I was out in it running the last of my local Christmas cards to the post office. Good to be home with the kitties and a warm cup of tea! 🍵

Speaking of my older daughter's conversion to fountain pens, she just sent me this ink link. It's the ink she's chosen for thank-you cards for Christmas. She also mentioned she had ordered a new pen but with a medium nib to handle the shimmer.

My father was a fundamentalist preacher. He used to joke about charlatan preachers, "When you are making a weak point, just raise your voice and pound the pulpit." That appears to be the advice Trump followed in last night's speech.
