PRINCETON, N.J. (AP) — New Jersey Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy signed a law Monday to prohibit public and school libraries from banning books in the state and to enshrine protections against civil and criminal charges for librarians who comply with the law.

As we see multiple unqualified nominees in the new administration, this is a good time to point out that DEI initiatives exist not as an alternative to merit but as a response to those in power who associated merit with whiteness and saw white people (esp. men) as the only ones deserving of chances.
