I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about the problems with modern computers lately. The hardware is better than ever but the problem is the software.

Our devices have become time vampires, designed to capture our attention, often at the expense of our mental health.

Alt: a man sits at a desk in front of a computer screen. He’s Colin, the energy vampire from What We Do In the Shadows, a vampire who doesn’t drink blood, but just sucks the will to live from people.

A monkeys paw 100% curled when I saw a Palm Pilot in the late 90s and said "Wow, it's going to be awesome when I can carry a computer with me in my pocket, everywhere I go"

I feel like Mario 64 did it, but the FLUDD made it easier. The later games added what is essentially infinite wall jump, which served a lot of the same purposes I think.

The thing that really stands out to me playing those older games now is how little they cheated to make it easier on players.

Secure Boot up and running on the desktop linux box. This feels good.
An image of a terminal output from a Linux machine. It says

"sudo sbctl status
[sudo] password for will:
Installed: sbctl is installed
Owner GUID: <redacted>
Setup Mode: Disabled
Secure Boot: Enabled
Vendor Keys: microsoft

I blame Around the Horn for this, but also I loved Around the Horn.

The FLUDD makes the whole thing feel much more forgiving than the earlier games. I think they solved a lot of those problems by making the margins more forgiving and adding mantling and stuff like that.

Galaxy 1 and 2 are real high points for the franchise. Sunshine is interesting and has a few of the all-timer levels, but definitely a product of its time and I think I'd have a hard time revisiting it now.

I am very excited to listen to this podcast.

Oh I’ve been playing the heck out of that, but they’ve sold a bazillion copies. I usually try to call out stuff with a small number of reviews.

I played a handful of really good indie games over the last few days, here’s a thread of them. Feel free to chuck stuff you’ve liked in the replies.

What if the goal of Stardew Valley was to build a rocketship and all of the factories and infrastructure you need to make a it work? That's the premise of Little Rocket Lab, which has a demo that's been entertaining me while I wait for it to release next week.

I played Void Crew around the time it left Early Access with the @nextlander.com lads, and I just revisited it to try out all of the new stuff they've added. I love where this is going, and I can't wait to see what this team does next.

I've finally finished Sword of the Sea, and it continued to deliver all the way through. It's from Giant Squid (the ABZU and The Pathless studio) and it's easily one of the most beautiful games I've ever played. The game surprised and delighted me all the way through.
