It feels like it might have some analogy with people who freak out about rare cases of vaccine injury, buy don't care about excess deaths due to non-vaccination. The active harm (real or perceived) is always worse than the passive harm, regardless of difference in the magnitude

Plus, if you play everyone in the conference, it's much harder to argue you were unfairly left out of the postseason when you don't win the conference. The SEC having wildly unbalanced schedules this year kind of sucked for everyone
