You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today
And then one day you find ten years have got behind you.
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun.

Yesterday I noticed clumps of pōhutukawa flowers on the driveway. The tuis individuality guard these trees when they flower. I've seen our local tui take on groups of rosellas. I think they've been literally ripping off his food source. Maybe out of spite lol.
So all introduced species are fair game

More recently we have a colony of barn owls established and swallows for a few decades. These are now considered native not introduced. I'm only working off my fading memory though.
Possums are an industry here as are wallabies.

Yes there's lots.
A couple of years back guys working on an oil rig found a beautiful green pigeon resting. They helicopters it to a vet because it was exausted. The vet had to put it down because they had helped it reach NZ. If it had made it alone it would have been considered a native species

Yes I agree, something like that and of course if you go back far enough you'd come to Gondwana land. 85,000,000 years ago NZ and Australia split.
As you know we have uniquely different fauna to go with the flora. But as I say I had no idea why Australia didn't have pōhutukawa trees but makes sense

You're welcome🙏

Truth is they may have originally been in Tasmania Australia but apparently no more.
Just like with your possums things grow quite well here.

😆 We know Pavlova and Phar Lap come from New Zealand.
Now you want our pōhutukawa as well?
Btw we gift you Russell Crowe and Joh Bjelke-Petersen. Have them, you're welcome.
As for pōhutukawa I'll screen shot it here what I just posted from Google.

I know they grew them in San Francisco but they blocked all the drains so became a big problem.
I didn't know that Australia didn't have them. But you'll have plenty of bottle brush trees and they're similar at a distance.

Lol 😆
The pōhutukawa and its botanical cousins, all members of the myrtle tree family, are found all over the South Pacific. Species have taken up residence in places such as Hawaii, Tahiti, South America, Africa, and even sub-Antarctic islands. The one place these trees are not found is Australia

If you mean kiwis I've got plenty of cuzzies living in Brisbane and round about. Soon the population of NZ will be greater overseas than here. It's as expensive here as in Sydney.

Yeah it's enough for two of us without feeling overly full.
November 28, 2025 at 8:43 AM
Thankyou good kind Sir🙏👍
November 28, 2025 at 8:40 AM
Native where?
November 28, 2025 at 8:38 AM
It's true it's pretty amazing and easily taken for granted.

That's an old favorite. Sadly not so much on my approved diet plan anymore. But dinner and desert in one nevertheless.
Meanwhile I shared a plate of Nachos with the Missus.

That's good to hear Mai. We have earthquakes in New Zealand too. Mostly they are not a worry.👍
November 28, 2025 at 5:15 AM
I have family living in Fukuyama city, Hiroshima Prefecture. They were there during the tsunami and earthquakes in 2011 so we're always thinking of Japan during these times.

Thankyou Mrs Chippy. Sound advice. I've tried to grow things around the glass handrails and put pot plants in Windows so as to stop bird strikes.
We have a lot of birds around nesting in a nearby Phoenix palms and feeding on Pohutukawa flowers
So it's a busy time of the year for the pollen feeders.

I have to agree with you Kiwi 100% I'm a bit of a Dr. Dolittle myself. As you know we don't have squirrels in NZ.
My day begins by feeding my granddaughters rabbit and 2 cats left with me.
The cats don't even bother the birds
They gather at the back door waiting for me every morning. 😹😹🐇 🐦

Tui are native to New Zealand and are predominantly nectar feeders. Mid winter they appreciate a little sweet water to see them through when flowers are scarce.
