Good morning! I'm going to go a bit out on a limb today and argue that Donald J. Trump is not the CAUSE of most of our current political problems, but is instead, the RESULT of the abdication of powers granted by our Constitution to both the Congress and the Supreme Court of the United States. 🧵

Yes, Democrats can and must argue both economic issues and Trump's threat to democracy and the rule of law. Focusing just on health care and the economy makes it look not only like you are arguing politics as usual, but also makes you look weak in the face of Trumps attempted authoritarian takeover.

First, they sent ICE, and I said nothing because I'm not an illegal alien. Then, they sent the National Guard to support ICE, and I said nothing because ICE needs to do it's job. Finally, they sent the 82nd Airborne, and I said nothing because I was dead.

The 9th circuit ruled the opposite. That the president’s power is not plenary, and that it’s subject to judicial review. I wonder why they gave him a do-over. Didn’t Trump sue over an edited Harris video?

My Fellow Members of Congress: This Is a Naked Power Grab

The Constitution is clear about many things. There are three branches of government. Presidents can be elected to only two terms. And Congress, not the executive branch, has the power of the purse, meaning the power to control federal spending. It is right there, as clear as day in Article I, Section 9, Clause 7: “No money shall be drawn from the Treasury, but in consequence of appropriations made by law.”

#SCOTUS has already given Trump almost total immunity for anything he does as President. If it also gives him the sole authority to decide what is an emergency, then we will have slipped into a full-force dictatorship. Even Hitler required an Enabling Act from the Reichstag.
