It was a human ripple, she was sure by how unfamiliar it felt, after all this time. She moved toward the surface and found a finger trailing in the water - a small, delicate finger, attached to a small delicate hand. A child's hand. Children were her favorite, because they did not have to be reminded of the possibilities of the world. She sent the gentlest of waves up towards the tiny hand, and heard a shriek of delight echo through the surface, down to where she was." She came up closer to it, not close enough to show her face, but close enough to whisper. *hello, hello, hello* she said in a voice that sounded like drops of rain and rushing river water and the ocean's tides. The child gasped and leaned closer to the water. "Hello," came a whisper back, and in the dark of the depths, she smiled."

A gorgeous tarot deck caught my eye at the thrift store a while ago, and I've decided to get to know the cards a bit by doing flash fiction for whatever card I pull. This is the first one (and yes, the fact that it was The Artist did feel like A Thing).

Will be different tomorrow, in an hour, in a moment. This tree can only be grown now, can only be called forth by this hand, wielding this brush, drawing now in short strokes that pulse on the paper as leaves tossed in the wind, as patterns in the bark. The artist drew the tree as only they could, and in the dreamworld it stretched its branches until they were wide enough to offer shade. And it was good."

Val is lonely and having a very bad day.

Tomorrow he would figure this out; tonight, he wasn’t prepared to do more than regret his entire existence. Somewhere not far away, thunder clapped. The sky had been threatening a storm on his way home earlier, and now in the depths of night it made good on the threat. Rain followed soon after the thunder, sheets of it breaking against the house, pummeling the window in waves. The force of it felt like a relief, like his life and all his stupid choices and their consequences could be swallowed up by the storm. He pushed himself up and went to the window, watching for a long time as the sky repeatedly cracked open and then returned to itself, and the rain threatened to flood the garden. It finally began to abate, and he shook himself from his trance, wondering how long he’d stood there. He often lost time in moments like that. He preferred it, honestly - to come untethered from the world. To let time slip past with no consequences, because he had no ties to anything that time could take. Except now you do, a voice in his head whispered, and all the calm he’d found in the storm deserted him once again. He sighed, and felt a spike of hunger. He wasn’t in the mood, but it would be bad to ignore it. This was part of how he kept things under control – careful, measured care of his needs. No chance for anything inside him to get desperate.
