Love how the new Virtual Boy screen color options will basically be piss and vomit.

Also funny how they offer a grayscale option which is basically what VB games look like natively without the red LEDs which makes the lack of a 2D option more curious

Anyone else notice they are using the S3&K font here?

If they are actually putting out unreleased VB games, it would be a missed opportunity if we don't get a proper release of Bound High

Probably the most interesting aspect of NSMBU would be its life post 2012. The New Super Luigi U expansion provided a new twist for seasoned players while the Deluxe Switch port in 2019 further broadened the games shelf life while introducing its own form of nightmare fuel. 5/6

The spirit of Super Mario World can be felt in the large, interconnected map with a myriad of shortcuts and secrets to reward dedicated players. This is perhaps what I might consider the most open ended NSMBU game with so many possible paths to the end. 4/6

Of course, that's not to say New Super Mario Bros U is a bad game or without any good ideas. Its arguably the most refined and polished out of all the NSMB games with some occasional flashes of creativity shining through the well-worn world themes. 3/6

A Super Mario Bros retrospective! Exploring the 2D Mario series

Part 12

New Super Mario Bros U (Deluxe)
2012,2019 Wii U/NSW

Being the Wii U's flagship 1st party launch title NSMBU had a lot working against it from the start in the fact that it made for a poor first impression for the Wii U. 1/6

These guys were the real bastards of SPD. Sold out to the Troobians just because they wanted to be on the winning team. Fully deserved to get their asses kicked by B-Squad

3. Sonic Adventure 2 Battle alongside Sonic Mega Collection was essentially my interest in the Sonic series truly began in earnest. I know it hasnt aged the most gracefully but it still early 2000s Sonic at its absolute best

I had both of those games as well. The commercial for Nightmare in Dreamland still lives in my head to this day.

2. Super Mario Galaxy, the game that arguably made me a true Mario fan. Such an absolute joy to play from beginning to end that is also not afraid to tug at the heartstrings at times. I also credit it with giving me a greater appreciation for video game music.

1. Team Fortress 2 holds a significant place in my growth being what basically inspired me to get a Steam account as well as build my first PC. Words cannot describe all the memories I made in the earlier 2010s with this game.

The Coin Rush mode which challenges the player to clear a randomly selected set of stages while collecting as many coins as possible is arguably the true highlight of NSMB2 feeling the closest Mario has ever come to offering a rogue like. It's a shame that they didn't expand on this mode more. 5/6

In terms of gameplay New Super Mario Bros 2 isn't all that much to write home about essentially feeling like an abridged version of NSMB Wii. The return of the Super Leaf and Raccoon Mario is a neat touch although it feels underutilized compared to Super Mario Bros 3. 3/6

A Super Mario Bros retrospective! Exploring the 2D Mario series

Part 11

New Super Mario Bros 2
2012, Nintendo 3DS

Releasing right in the shadow of Super Mario 3D Land, New Super Mario Bros 2 had a bit of a tough hill to climb from the start. 1/6

I always found it funny how Bionicle starts off as a fairly generic good vs evil tale before veering into a full-on Xenoblade Chronicles level plot twist and ending with a final battle that would feel right at home in an MCU film.
