People are afraid, confused and anxious as federal, state and local actions threaten the safety, wellbeing and livelihoods of the queer and transgender communities. while the full impact of these measures is uncertain, know this: LGBTQ+ groups and allied organizations in the Richmond Area are fighting for and with you. Leaders from local nonprofits, joined by the city of Richmond, are actively working together to advocate, mobilize and push back on these harmful policies. Our community is powerful and resilient. And while it's essential that we marshal support from policymakers, civic leaders and corporate allies, our community is no stranger to doing this work ourselves. And we will. Decades ago, our community cared for people with HIV and AIDS when no one else would. By the 1990s, Richmond opened one of the country's first LGBTQ+ youth support nonprofits. Today, a prism of nonprofits create community for transgender youth and adults, LGBTQ+ adults and seniors, and so many more. We are bold and leading with strength and love. We are not backing down and are actively working to meet the growing needs of our community. In the weeks and months ahead, please take care of yourself. The richmond region is home to dozens of lgbtq+ and allied organizations where you can find resources, information, friends, and family. Meanwhile, our organizations will remain steadfast in our community to supporting and protecting the LGBTQ+ community in the following ways: -speaking out against harmful attacks and injustices leveled at our community -organizing and creating events for our community and our allies to gather, celebrate, rejuvenate and protest -empowering our community and our allies with information, resources and leadership to fight back Additionally, we have firm expectations of our civic leaders and policy makers at federal, state and local levels for which we will hold them accountable: -uphold protections for lgbtq+ people -protect and provide lifesaving healthcare to transgender youth -increase engagement and problem solving with impacted communities as we figure this out together, our teams have provided a list of resources below to keep you informed and engaged. we are here, we are listening, and we are fighting for you every minute of every day. please reach out with any questions or if you need support.
