Linux on the PS2.

The desktop defaults to the WindowMaker window manager. I think that's fitting since the design of the PS2 does have quite a NeXT-esque aesthetic, if you squint just right.

I made a video, as I occasionally do. This one is about the world of email before we all started using Internet email, in particular company group mail.

My first job as a teen back in 1997 was at a small computer store operated out of a garage that sold Gateway2000 desktops and Toshiba laptops to gov't agencies and NGOs in Guyana. (And by small I mean the owner, the receptionist and me.)

The machines ran well and I loved the cow spotted branding.
18 years ago today, Gateway 2000 came to an end. It turns out when you build loyalty based on great customer service and then you cut costs by cutting customer service, the loyalty goes elsewhere. #retrocomputing dfarq.homeip.net/bought-gatew...

After using Task Manager in Windows NT 4.0 for the first time and then going back to Windows 98, my life just wasn't the same. I now knew there was a better way to live. Even if that way meant sacrificing Device Manager.

Pro tip for Linux /Unix users: Once you are done with administering your box, always end an elevated session by running the `sudo -K` command. This prevents unauthorized use by others if you leave your terminal open. Apart from that, it is useful for testing your scripts & other admin commands (1/n)

This is cool! Unlike solutions I've seen before that require blank SIMs that you write your own data to, including Ki values for encryption, this setup just ignores the Ki so you can use any SIMs that aren't active on a real operator. Neat!

I stumbled upon this Toshiba Satellite 300CDT ('98) in storage yesterday & attempted getting a modern Linux distro working on it. No luck at first, but then I found a 64MB EDO RAM stick taking this to 80MB. It now boots the latest Tiny Core Plus, I even have WiFi working too 👍
