Do you know roughly when your 2026 event will be? We would have loved to be at the 2025, but plan our events about a year in advance 😞

Small business incubators (typically state, city, or county funded) and co-working spaces (especially co-op or non-profit ones) are also great first steps into having a "stepping stone" space.

Our city's business incubator is where we had our first studio!
wraith.games
Your county's small business development center and chamber of commerce are also good help

Plus city, state, and federal arts programs typically suport non-profit gamedevs (like co-ops). The National Endowment for the Arts comes to mind!
wraith.games
Possibly, but there are great ways to get some going. For starters, co-ops help co-ops, so local credit unions are great!

Since in many states, co-ops are nonprofits, a local community foundation can help

Then there's sharedcapital.coop & seedcommons.org for starting co-ops!
Shared Capital Cooperative - Building Economic Democracy
Formerly Northcountry Cooperative Development Fund (NCDF). We are a national CDFI loan fund that connects co-ops and capital to build economic democracy.

Of course, we have unlimited PTO, flex time/flex space/flexible work arrangement (FWA), and zero crunch, so anyone can *choose* to work from home literally whenever/wherever/for any reason, but that rarely happens.

Our people just like the studio space :/
wraith.games
Exactly!

For us, with games being so hands-on, having a space for people to bounce off ideas, eat together, have a big white board, do creative exercises... It's all part of our process.

People hated working from home for long stretches because of that lack of human, artistic cooperation
wraith.games
Largely. Some states may differ, however, that's usually minutia about total number of required board members and quorum size. Things like that. Always talk to a lawyer

With collectives, however, the "election" to the board is automatic on joining as a worker and removal is automatic upon leaving.
wraith.games
We agree! This is how we operate :)
wraith.games
Being a cooperative/collective is largely an ownership structure, where sociocracy is an operational structure. They are not incompatible.

For instance, we operate organizationally by borrowing principles from both open allocation & Holacracy that does not change the fact we're a worker collective
wraith.games
Members are also required to declair wether an act or a meeting is "as a member" or "as a board member" as they are legally distinct roles that you have to occupy at the same time.
wraith.games
It's a bit more complicated than that, as the membership and board *are* separate things with separate rules (often by law). However, in a collective, all members serve on both automatically and if they leave one, they're removed from both.
wraith.games
Additionally, all co-ops need a board. Whether you're a representative democracy electing members to the board to run the organization or if you're a direct democracy (a collective) a board is required to be a co-op.

In a collective, ALL members (worker/owners) are also part of the board.
wraith.games
At least from our perspective we tried the going remote thing and it was not conducive to good work. While all of our members have the option to work remotely, whenever they choose, most choose to come into the physical studio space.
wraith.games
Unlike an LLC where you effectively have the flexibility to register anywhere (due to loophole or oversight), the best place to register a Co-op is where the co-op actually is.

If your state has a Co-op designation in its laws, we'd recommend filing as that rather than an LLC (if you qualify)
wraith.games
These are some great questions, and while we can't speak for all collectives, we have a lot to say about how *we* do things!

Our Creative Director and Board President, Jay, has been working on a huge FAQ document (inspired by Motion Twin's) that they'll try to push in the next day or two for you!

Co-ops are a tradition here in the US as old as the country itself.

Right now, so many are finding that their rights as workers are being infringed; when hours are longer, your dollar buys less, and you have no say in how your place of work is run, what's more American than Worker Democracy?

Even Hank Hill loves a good co-op!

In "Raise the Steaks" (Season 12, Episode 6 of 'King of the Hill'), Hank joins his local food co-op after realizing how much better the food is than the big box store, Mega-Lo-Mart!
