Not a villain, sensu stricto, but rather a primary antagonist… The Steward is all that remains of a long-term bio-research facility. Its purposes, to collect and catalogue life with the aim of interceding with nascent sapient species before they trashed their respective biomes in the attempt to escape their gravity wells. The Builders are long gone, but the Steward remains, carrying out its eternal instructions, to maintain the viability of the Enclosures at all cost, even when that’s in conflict with the wishes of the sapient beings therein.

#NovemberWorldbulders - Past Heroes. There are several, but today we will focus on Rashiné.
His name is Rashiné He entered the Enclosure roughly 80k years ago with the first large wave of mixed folk hailing from deep within an area of transition between Neanderthals and Sapiens east of the modern-day Caspian Sea. There was a prolonged period of violence where Rashiné’s people faced aggression from prior waves of both Neanderthals and Sapiens who had come from eras before contact of their species. With help from Tourr’di, Nikho, and those who follow the Red Brothers, he led his people to the safety of the Lake region far to the west where they still live in isolation in towns of floating woven reed upon the water.

White is the color of the enclosure wall, a gargantuan, naked-eye structure with a baffle at its southernmost end. The northernmost island within its confines is roughly the size of Borneo. The wall is to scale. There are 39 others besides the one dedicated to Earthly life.

“Coin crow,” Garrick greeted, his voice rasping like iron on a file. “I’ve wagons enough outside to keep your smithy singing for a fortnight. Not just any pig iron, mind you. Solid Marcher ingots, sound as your master’s walls. Tomrick Iron-Tongue himself says he won’t work with less.” There were a few murmurs of assent in the crowd. Tomrick’s name carried weight. Garrick leaned into it like a smith leaning on his hammer. Edric folded his hands atop the ledger, gaze flat. “Tomrick’s tongue is silver when he’s praising, sharper than steel when he’s not. But he does not set Bronzegate’s prices. I do.” The merchant grinned, gap-toothed. “Aye, and you’ll not see another load like mine before winter. You’ll pay fair for it, crow, or your foundations will go wanting.” The hall murmured, hungry for the clash. Edric’s quill scratched, a number crisp and deliberate. He turned the ledger so Garrick could see. “Ten percent above last shipment. No more.” Garrick scoffed. “Twenty. Else I roll my wagons back the way they came. You’ll not patch walls with parchment.”

Better that you go to him, and take him a game for which he has not prepared.” Podrick nodded, then frowned when she leaned forward, lowering her voice just enough for their tight circle. “And don’t go empty-handed.” She set down her cup. “The next shipment of stone is well ahead of schedule. Take it with you. Let him stew on your silence while you load up. Make the matter real and pressing by arriving with stone to move. If he lets the cargo pass, we know he means only to rattle chains as men are wont to do. That is one thing. If he turns you back, then there’s no doubt that he means to break the chain completely. That is something else entirely.” Luras’s grin turned sly. “A neat trap. He’ll either have to bare teeth, or tuck tail.” Alren snorted, wiping foam from his beard. “And if he bares them, then we’ll see whether he’s got bite enough to match. He doesn’t, but his actions are already foolish. Who knows what foolishness remains in reserve.” Podrick toyed with the edge of his bread, thinking. The idea prickled. It was bold, too bold for the comfort of the boy he still sometimes felt himself to be, but the wisdom of it was plain. Niceties and courtesies could be spun a dozen ways on parchment. A loaded ship at his dock filled with Evenfall men could not. He lifted his mug. “Stone, then,” he said at last, meeting Odé’s eyes. “If he means only to bargain, he’ll bargain. And if he means war…” He let the sentence hang. Luras tapped his cup to Podrick’s with relish. “The bear has claws enough, I think.”

Gendry studied her, whistling low. “Seven save me, she looks like she could punch holes through trees.” Issa’s lips curved. “She very nearly has. Her husband grows rich selling firewood.” A roar of approval when Halima’s arrow landed dead center. Behind the cheers, Gendry heard another name being chanted. Kabelo. Issa gestured toward him, a man of equal frame and sinew, his chest gleaming with oil, every striation of muscle crisply picked out in the bright sunlight. His presence at the line drew just as many cries as Halima’s, the crowd split clean down its middle as to whom they favored. They loosed shot for shot, each strike greeted with thunderous applause. By the time the attendants brought forth the last bows - great arched monsters, thicker-limbed than any Gendry had ever seen - both Halima and Kabelo vibrated with exertion, shoulders trembling faintly from the effort of the contest. Yet neither entertained defeat in their expressions.

Seems the gods must give us all our chances, else half of us would die unloved.” There was nothing for it but to relent to the man’s mood, else come across as rude, which wasn’t what Podrick wanted. It had started the trip before last. Just flirtation and sly glances when they’d been fed in Lord Errol’s great hall. A pretty lass with a turned up nose and bright eyes. The time after, Caldon was missing for most of the trip. Podrick raised a brow, feigning offense. “Plain, is it? You mean to say I don’t measure up to Lord Buckler? Am I not worthy?” Caldon barked a laugh, quick and awkward. “Seven save me, I meant no slight, Ser Podrick. You’ve handsomer hair than I’ll ever manage, and the womenfolk all say you’ve kind eyes and a gentle way about you. But Buckler, that lad’s got the look of a bard’s verse about him, and no use pretending otherwise.” Podrick kept his frown a heartbeat longer, then let the corner of his mouth curl up. “Aye, he does. Gods help me, I know it. I’ve seen how eyes follow him when he walks a hall. Makes a man feel invisible at times.”
