I don't need the handle to be short or memorable - especially with the rise of app stores and easier ways to share links I think that's becoming less of an issue, or even that people are ignoring domains altogether.

I just want some validated address nobody but me controls where I can be reached.

(it's not the monetary cost I'm objecting to here, it's the reliance on a centralized set of companies, and the hassle of needing to renew)
There are also potential benefits wrt censorship with something like a distributed DNS protocol, but it remains a problem for further internet democratization.

... The one missing piece is some sort of external permanent handle/address system.
The problem with domains, outside of a platform like blue sky handing out subdomains, is that they have to be renewed every year, and that you're at the mercy of the domain registrar.

From my phone I couldn't see the "American Workers" text.

Seems a more truthful sign that way. Can't think of why.

It can only really apologize if it were a "person" in the legal/metaphysical sense.

Which would both make it an AGI (and thus quite an accomplishment) and also raise the traditional sci-fi ethical concerns around the rights of such a being.

The problem I have with domains is the fact that they expire.
Unfortunately this is less of a BlueSky problem and more of a whole-internet-infrastructure problem. I'd prefer something based on some distributed permanent address, including for BlueSky ids, but that's a huge undertaking.

A NEW USE FOR SQUASH

Hub (just starting for office) - “By the way, was there any of that boiled squash left over from dinner last night?”
Wife - ‘Yes, dear. Why?”
Hub - “I want to put a little on my mustache to make my business associates think we can afford eggs.”

You' re thinking of _American_ small cars.
Japan has an even smaller class of cars/trucks called "Kei cars" en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kei_car.
I've heard of Americans wanting to import some of the trucks but can't, because of import laws.

.... Is this a situation where running inside a normal CI system would have handled the cleanup for you?
Especially if it supports running jobs inside containers.

... And if so, that potentially allows for ditching DNS for some form of distributed id ledger, and the certificate authority setup entirely.

... or may not even be the exact site, as with Bluesky/bsky.app.

Instead, it feels like more often people find sites in ways that lend themselves to opaque ids with a name as metadata, especially over social media or from search engines.

I had a whole long thing I was typing up, but the fundamental question really is... Are we at a point with the internet where we could ditch DNS, and transition to some other static-id system? Site identity is usually only part of the domain (especially with larger sites buying multiple TLD subs)
March 29, 2025 at 3:37 AM
The issue isn't necessarily the expense so much as it is the hassle of maintaining the registration and trying to have some sort of continuity plan.

But that brings up a more fundamental question -

Why do I need a domain?
I don't necessarily mean for a bluesky PDS; why do I need one at all?

(Strictly speaking this is also a problem with most email cloud services as well, as they have abandonment policies to reclaim and release old email addresses. And possibly for other types of cloud services as well...)
March 29, 2025 at 3:37 AM
The _problem_, such as it is, is that I would be locked into paying for a domain for... essentially forever. Certainly for the rest of my life, and likely for some time after that, or risk being impersonated in some form or another.
March 29, 2025 at 3:37 AM
The biggest hurdle, though, isn't actually technical, and is actually one of the easiest parts to get. I'm talking, of course about a domain, and the issues with maintaining a DNS registration.

A domain would be required to run my own PDS, but also for things like email.
