Yes! This is actually a research question we’re looking into at the moment. There’s already some work done on assessing the impact of future climate on certain hydropower plants (check Wechsler & Stähli 2019).

Even when focusing on one component of the electricity system, we can already detect the footprint of climate change and variability. This highlights the need to include climate change and variability in future energy systems planning.
yasserhaddad.bsky.social
We then fed these climate-informed time series into Nexus-e, an electricity system modelling framework. We noticed that electricity prices respond differently depending on policy assumptions, with the strongest variation perceived in winter.

We successfully modelled generation from 600+ run-of-river plants across Switzerland (1991–2022).
At first glance, generation seems to increase, but that’s mostly due to capacity expansion.
When we isolated the hydro-climatic effects, the trend is actually slightly declining, especially in summer.

We looked at how climate change is already affecting run-of-river hydropower in Switzerland—and what that means for electricity system planning.

I read about the lawsuits, I really hope something comes out of them. I’m glad to hear that groups are mobilizing. But I am a bit surprised to see very little coverage of protests, marches and other activities (aside from lawsuits) in large media outlets, whether in the US or outside.
yasserhaddad.bsky.social
Everyday I read about a new enraging Trump decision, but I don’t see much retaliation yet from those affected and those that oppose his fascist policies. Is there really no large-scale mobilization in the USA against Trump?

Let’s call it what it is: a witch-hunt, and the victims are scientists and all those working for a better future.

Avec l'actualité c'est un peu passé inaperçu, mais plus de 10 ans après la mort de Rémi Fraisse, la Cour Européenne des Droits de l'Homme vient de condamner la France pour violation du droit à la vie.

There is no automatic reversion to "normal" in politics. Nor will the timid business-as-usual which got us into this mess get us out of it.
We'll achieve a better society after Trump and similar tyrants only through massive and focused movement-building. It has to start right now.

I think the crazy developments in the US ought to remind us to hold our representatives accountable, to inform ourselves through credible sources and to engage with those that don’t share our opinions. It’s fundamental to counter populist takes based on misinformation, to not end up like the US🙃

The best climate solutions -- by far -- are the ones that are ready to scale *now*.

Waiting for pie-in-the-sky tech solutions, which never seem to show up as promised, is *exactly* the wrong thing to do.

I was just watching the recording of the Deep Learning for Climate and Weather session @agu.org, and I could not believe the level of condescendence of some of the speakers (see screenshot). AI/ML research needs more humility and respect, we should be working hand in hand, not one against the other.

I get that COPs are the best we have but they are infuriating - it is so hard to simply keep past commitments let alone accelerate action at the speed and scale required to have any hope of achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement. Shame on the countries that show up to obstruct rather than act.
yasserhaddad.bsky.social
Brilliant thread summarizing each country’s interventions during the #COP29 Plenary. Not surprised to read that most countries express disappointment in this year’s COP. Very weak developments, anchored in a logic of delay.

EU "very much concerned" on mitigation text "we need a much stronger language on the concrete follow up to GST"

"[Climate extremes] in Africa, the Americas, our friends in the Caribbean & the Pacific…shows we need to do more, not less, than the UAE consensus on mitigation"
