3. The biggest change contemplated by the memo is to require "internet identity proofing" for "benefit claims… made over the phone." When an SSA customer is "unable to utilize the internet ID proofing, customers will be required to visit a field office to provide in-person identity documentation"

I have warned about the rightwing attack on empathy. It is as dangerous as any attack on democracy. It is an attack on our humanity. Once you turn off empathy you can do anything.

Far-right politics is about indulging people who are too lazy, selfish, or stupid to tolerate discomfort - the discomfort of learning, thinking, and thinking critically about how you interact with a complicated and uncertain world.
I suspect this is a HUGELY underestimated factor in radicalization. If you look at, say, QAnon boards, it’s not really folks looking for scapegoats for their dire material circumstances. It’s middle-class people with boring lives who want to imagine they’re in The Parallax View.
One of my best friends is from a sleepy, wealthy small town in the south-west of Germany. He said, so many of my parents’ neighbours are rich and bored, with little to complain about, and they’ve radicalised themselves at dinner parties and online. In their aimlessness, they’ve bonded over hate.
