i feel the same about all the defences of Truth, the Absolute, religion etc that have been popular to adopt the past few years — just seems to not really have much point to it beyond being the opposite of what the people who were in-vogue a few decades ago thought for the most part.

it's a nice idea (and a comforting one for sure) that out there is this nonhuman thing we can point to as a guarantor of stability, objectivity, perfection etc, but I'm less and less convinced that this is anything but a nice idea

ultimately tho I think the simplest way to put it is that he's saying we have collectively reified the real into a fixed image, which we then treat as if it is 'reality' and not something we ourselves constructed in a sort of tower of babel hubristic attempt to reach singularity.

the real irony of this is that it encourages people to move much more vigorously according to the logic of hyperreality, seeking ever more Real experiences in simulation, immediacy, an utter hostility to artifice and mediation.

the main mistake I see is ppl thinking he means our representations of reality are 'too fake', but it's more that they're too real ("realer than real" -- a real we can attain, know, touch) because the things we take for reality now, ie news, writing, photos, *are* simulation

at this stage you can say (as baudrillard does) that reality/the referent has disappeared through it becoming an uncontested Fact, such that our 'simulations' -- a byword for any kind of model we make to grasp the (unattainable) real -- attain an unprecedented facticity and reality

imo the best way to grasp him is thinking abt Authenticity as a concept (both in the heideggerian and the colloquial sense). hyperreality is synonymous with something like "authenticity-in-itself", as in the historical point we can begin referring to things as simply 'authentic' without a referent

though of course I think we should probably assume many of them realise this, that it's not that they're against 'globalist agendas' or imperialism, rather that their globalism would exchange 'progressive values' for social conservatism, traditionalism, the 'objectivity' of biology etc
